J10 door mirror mount

Post by fsjcowboy »

I'm rebuilding a '78 J10 which I purchased in 2020. It has matching factory tri-mount stainless steel mirrors. When I removed these mirrors, one side was mounted differently from the other.

The driver's-side mirror was mounted with SS bolts with rubber well nuts (similar to the well nuts on the roof cargo rails on the Wags). The passenger door was mounted with SS bolts with steel washers and nuts on the door inside.

Which is the correct configuration? Thanks.

Whether they were factory, dealer or customer installed, the installer would not be expected to remove the door cards to install them. The parts catalog shows the OEM tripod mirrors installed with self-tapping screws. I'd guess they are aftermarket, the passenger side was knocked off, and put back with bolts through the steel.

I remounted mine and toyed with nuts and bolts, stainless of course. But sheet metal screws grip the door steel well and haven't come loose after a few years. I used a thin nylon washer between the mirror and door, just to minimize scratching the paint.
