Equipment? V8? Six? Automatic or manual transmission? Steel? Aluminum? Plastic? How big is it? Needs something for scale. There's an '81-86 parts books here that might show you. https://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html

Maybe a front spring snubber?

Looks like it bolts to the trans-crossmember at the frame and is maybe a trans-torque arm snubber? Second guess, rubber exhaust hanger attached to the frame at the trans cross member

Exhaust hanger seems likely. Seems large for an exhaust mount, but does not look stout enough for a spring or transmission snubber. The style of the insulator seems too modern for an '84 J10 exhaust hanger. Muffler shops often substitute hangers with an L-shaped steel rod that could mate with this type of an insulator. Suggest to OP that he look along the factory exhaust routing (right side, along frame) front to back for somewhere this might have mounted and supported the exhaust.

This is from 81J, a parts book on the Tom COllins site.

I've reduced the size to post here - you can go there and read or download the book and get somewhat better resolution. Even so, it's not a great transfer.

Maybe item 21 with a muffler shop insulator?

This is my J20 -

Ignore the coating of red dirt and look at the bracket. This is the factory-style hanger/insulator. This is an '82, and it might have changed by '84 to sit on the top of the frame.
