Sway bar link modification?

Post by j10builder »

81 J10 with 4" lift
Has anyone cut stock sway bar links and made a sleeve and pin type rig for over stock length applications? Hurts my feelings to drop $130 on a 4" over set when stock links are $30/set. I also thought about cutting some tubing and just welding them to the right length - no pins but no cool, easy off road mod if I do that.

You might try disconnecting it for a while to see if you really miss it. Every FSJ seems a little different after you lift it. I have tube extensions on the sway bar on my 88 GW and I found I rarely disconnect the links on a 5" lift. They are nice to have if you do much towing.

Thanks. I'll try both maybe I'll go the cheap road now and if it is noticeable later, I can make the easy on/easy off version.

I lengthened the links for my Long Spring Suspension [5 "]. They are not pinned but could be easily done that way.

I haven't yet. My build got stopped in it's tracks while I finish my new shop (finally got the power on). I want to wait until the engine and drive train are installed before I cut, sleeve and weld the sway bar links. That way I can be sure the sway bar is parallel and set up right. Everything is built and ready to go in. I just have to finish getting the shop functional before I can get back to what I really want to be doing. I'll keep you posted though.

Did exactly that on my 83 many moons ago. I think I used 3/8" black iron pipe, or maybe galv, dont remember. Less than $10 in the whole job.

Yes, thats what I did. Home Depot/Lowes will let you buy a small Stick vs a 10 ft from the metal supple/
