229 Question

Post by MReese Wagoneer »

If your on Facebook you might have seen this
So as I prepared for a maiden voyage last week I checked the 229 and it was 99% empty
So in went 3 qts of ATF
I pull out of the drive and it’s just not wanting to move like it has before around the yard and up and down the street , lots of RPMs seemed to shift ehhh but it’s not right I know this , the fluid in the trans was eh needed to be changed but still good for a short drive
But something just isn’t right so I get around the block pull in go to do my 3 point turn around and it goes into reverse but just paint get the tires moving
Then I go to put it in park and that doesn’t grab , yes I’m pretty sure 2 wd
No park
I get it blocked I start walking around and I see big red line of fluid out the drive
The trans fluid is not this red , more brown!
New ATF is all over the exhaust but not on the body
So my question is what could be pumping fluid out , the fluid I did drain off was still bright red and darker
What is this hole ? I know the one is the vent and that hose was attached that went up
Image
After getting the Waggy where I wanted it Park now works

Now, the trans fluid is now milky brown , I have an extra 727 so it’s time just have it redone so that’s going on

But this XCase what the hell is the leak
I see no other obvious gushers , I see where it left a steam of fluid down the street Antoine the corner

I dont think I have ever seen a hole in that location on a 229. Looked in the TSM and didn't see anything in that location. The vent is up top like normal. I am pretty sure thats on the passenger side of the main housing?

I even googled images for 229's, which are surprisingly hard to find that side of the case.

I wonder if there is normally a plug there from manufacturing that came out?

Yes. Additional photo to confirm. There are different sub cases on the 229. Think this is the same section you're showing. Image

Yes if mounted all up the hole I have would be on the main back half near the tail shaft housing at about the 2 o’clock position

I have an 87 NP229 in my yard. That hole has a rubber plug in it. From your picture, it appears to be threaded and the hole goes in at an angle.

In this image the plug is #102.

Doesn’t look threaded to me, but maybe putting threads and plugging it with npt plug would be a good idea? Provided you can keep metal shavings out of the case

I took a peek at my 85 with the 229, and cannot see any hole on the side : passenger side of the rear output shaft!

It’s not on the output shaft housing it’s on the main housing
The vent tube is on the output housing ,

What I meant was on the rear facing part of the TC...

I took a peek, under the grime, I could see something... a little cleaning reveals some sort of plug, and it is at an angle, same as Flint, then the cell phone started to crash with every flash photo taken.

As a note the 228 has a slight bump in the metal casing.

Yep I came across 2 other 229's there is a rubber plug in this hole on both of them. that is missing on mine
i am surprised how much fluid this little plug holds back

so in 4 High, how much resistance should i feel between outputs, if i hold the front output and twist the rear output how hard will it be?

The factory test is to jack up one front wheel while in 4hi and turn the wheel with a torque wrench on a lug nut. I don't remember what the breakover torque is but its fairly low IIRC. I don't know if you should be able to get the coupler to slip by hand at the output shafts. If you can, you probably have a bad coupler.

I believe I read 80ft/lbs, once all together I will check that,
2 of the 229's I have i can oppose spin them easily with my hands
1 229 i can not oppose spin them unless I put pipe wrenches on them , this one wins, it will be going in, looks to be if I am reading the tag correctly out of an '89 ( if my mind is remembering the tag right)

Thanks for all your help, I am currently waiting on the converter back from the rebuilders, trans is in the shed and it is about 10` outside so the rebuilder can take a couple more days
