pyro's 82 Cherokee

Post by pyro »

Been on the hunt for a Cherokee for a few weeks and scored this hoopty on FB Market. Was really wanting a Laredo to match my J10, but for a grand I couldn't pass this up. It appears to be a base model, and the engine is smoking really bad. Good thing is I have three 258's in my garage needing homes. Looks like a 258/727/229 combo. Correct me if I'm wrong. I took a picture of the 4x4 shift lever.

It's high mileage, but aside from the smoking engine, the transmission and transfer case work fine, and there is almost no body rot (just two small spots behind the rear wheels). Plans are to swap out the engine, fix the rot (and front floor pans, but that's easy), and try to get a respray on it close to original color.

Anything else I need to look for or keep an eye on during my refresh? The PO said the rear window works (shocked), however since I'm parking it outside for the time being I haven't tried to mess with it at all.

The 727 was only available on factory tow package models. Otherwise 258 models got the 904. The t-case should be an NP219 (Marketed as a "quadra-trac", but is not the BW from the 70's) .

Outside of the floors (What *IS* that driver side floor made of?) it looks to be really solid.

Hmm good to know. I've never owned an np219 or a 904 before. Hope they aren't complete garbage. The drivers floor looks to be an old piece of metal sign with sheet metal screws holding it to the factory metal floors. Oi vey!

I went back and looked at your photos, and noticed the t-case shifter has a 2wd mode. The NP219 doesn't have 2wd. So either the shifter/knob was replaced with one from a later FSJ, or thats a very late 82 and actually has a 229 (Officially offered in 83). Probably just need to look at the plate on the back (big round plate, will say AM219, AM229, AM208, etc).

Does it have a vacuum disconnect front axle? That was standard on 83-84 229 equipped FSJs.

Just checked and looks like I've got the 904/np208 combo. Manual hubs also.

Checked the rear window and it does function, as do all of the lights minus the hazards. Trying to figure out if the hitch I have was a dealer add on or aftermarket. Looks like I have an amc 20 rear? Cant remember the front off hand but it looks like the one on my j10.

I'm guessing 31's are the biggest tires I can fit with no lift? It's currently got 245/75r16s on some cheap wagon wheels. Gonna be looking for some OEM wheels and maybe all terrain tires.

Axles will be a D44/M23, standard fair there.

I did see the manual hubs, but so many people swap them on even with a 229 or the like, can't use that as a tell. But the 208 is a great case.

Yeah I have one in the j10 but it's got a standard floor shift. Never used the little selector arm this ones got. Now onto my tire/wheel search and diagnosing this hitch.

Yeah I'm keeping my eye out. If I can find some cheap steel wheels I would try to pick up the factory hubcaps, but either way I'm gonna need some tires before it becomes roadworthy because the el cheapo's from 2006 are dry rotted to heck. Trying to decide what tire size I can fit with no lift.

Got a picture of the three AMC's in the driveway today.

Look at all that driveway space! You could extend the garage out 16 ft and have room for 3 more AMCs, FOMOCOs, Mopars etc :D

Found some cheap wheels and tires to replace the rollers it came with. I'll use the wheels until I can find some OEM offerings. Hoping to pull the drivetrain this weekend and start the rebuild process.

That would make a Nice Truggy conversion--just sayn. Cut the top off, weld on some bed rails, Tub the rear fenders, weld a back cab/window to close t in the cab, Gladiator Flares front and rear. Easy-Peasy

Good work. A lot of effort to pull the engine. Nice.

Hoping to get the transmission pulled this weekend, but in the mean time I did get some parts to secure it while it sits outside. Got both door stripped down and WD40'd the crap out of everything, as well as had some keys made for the doors and got the windows working properly. Also stripped my front floors down to the metal and unfortunately realized I will need all six repair panels as opposed to only the front two as I originally thought.

Also ordered my remanufactured 258 and floor panels from BJ's today.

I'm currently on the hunt for some blue interior trim also. I need some speaker grilles, an armrest, and a/c duct parts if you come across any.

Scored some 5 slots yesterday in FB market...got the set of four for $100. I test fitted them and they fit very snugly on the hub. (Center hole is 3.5") I also noticed that there is very little room between the outsides of the calipers and the inside of the rim (is that normal?)

Image
Image

Now I just need to figure out what center caps fit them!
