1985 Grand Wagoner Power windows

Post by ponchomax4791 »

Hello and thank you for allowing me to this group
I have a 85 grand wagoneer and i want to upgrade the power windows, as yo know the 85 came with the plastic track, i have been told that the 91's came with a better and longer lasting regulator.
does anyone know if any other regulators (like from grand cherokees, liberties, etc) work on my vehicle?
its kind of steep to puchase 4 regulators at $200 bucks a pop.
or does any one know where to buy the ones for less than $200?
thank you
have a great day :fsj:

I recently stumbled upon those on eBay: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 4096999181

Looking at the pictures and description, the seems to be good. And no plastic flex track, so should be more reliable I think

There are different quality for the plastic tracks, the better ones do not come all spiraled in a coil, they are brittle and require a pre warm up in 70F otherwise they break during installation and may break during cold weather on my 85, I have broken a few on installations. BJs and team wagoneers are shipped in their full length and seems to hold on and do not cost more.

The metal cables can bust at the welding anchor point as well, same version are installed in recent japanese windows (2005 civic, is recent enough for us driving mid 80's vehicles)

BTW I seem to only replace driver's side flex track... activated in cold weather!

2nd buying BJ's versions. Get the little attaching hardware when purchasing. FWIW, there are two sides. One side does both front and rear doors on passenger side. the other does both doors on driver's side. Buy Whatever needs replaced. Replace them along with cleaning track and relubing. Keep one of each side on hand for when the next one fails. I've never understood the craziness of "Oh, The late 90-91 was the shiznit! I must modify 'upgrade' mine to the same no matter the cost!" Just use what works. Buy the quality version. Keep a spare.

forgot the spare, X2, it will break at the most unconvenient time, keep some of the plastic wedges from harbor freight so you can keep the window close by jabbing the wedge between the glass and the inner window weatherstrip, a large screwdriver works as well but the plastic wedge will not damage the weatherstrip.

Hi with stupid flex tracs.. I have a 1990 GW and I changed doors to 1987 doors and it started flex trac problems .So I had new flex trac installed first try broke . So I removed cable motors from original doors to put in 1987 doors, No problem with fitment bolts and plugs are the same . Cable tracs are pricey but worth every penny.

Ah, but then you have to keep your windows wedged for 4-5 days while you wait for the spare to arrive. Hence-Keep spares.

I agree about BJs.

When I first bought my 1984 GW, both rear windows needed flex track. I first went with TGW. They do work, however I had one snap on my while I was reinstalling the mechanism. It was an ID-10-T error, but it did snap on me. I ordered another one, got it installed and both windows worked great for about 2 years. Then teenagers happened and one slammed a door with the window down and it snapped in the same place as before. So, I ordered 4 from BJs. These are more of a direct fit. No chance of them slipping out of place when putting it all back together (the little metal holdy thing on TGW is just weird) and they have held up pretty dang well. When I had the rig painted, I went back and installed all BJs just cuz I don't want to have to bend my arm like a circus freak again. One plus... once you replace these things, you get pretty good at it. The first time probably took me over an hour. This last time, an hour for all 4.

BJs does some stuff abso-freakin-lutely fantastic. Other times, TGW has what you need. There are other sources but these are my first stop when needing something.

Back to your first post anyone try the eBay possible upgrade? I’m trying to find stock 91’s but those look like a possible upgrade.
