2021 Grand Wagoneer article

Post by derf »

So, it won't be a true "Full Size Jeep" in the sense that it's not the SJ. But it will be "full size".

Anyway, Road & Track released a short article on what they know about the upcoming full size platform.

https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/f ... ease-date/

Bottom line, they don't know a whole lot. They certainly aren't saying anything new that hasn't been speculated before. It's still going to be a luxury marque that targets the high end market like the Land Rover and Mercedes territory, as well as Cadillac and Lincoln.

Plug in hybrid will probably be available since everyone is going that direction. But they speculated about a "hellcat" type version as well, which will surely cost more than my first house...

Anyway, I would very much not get my hopes up about this having anything more than a token cosmetic throwback to the SJ line. It will be a street machine that can handle the dirt roads out to country estates and that's probably about it.

The original Wagoneer was marketed the same way. It had 4wd so people could drive through snow, and go camping. Not sure I agree with it being in the 120-200k range like a Range Rover, but I can easily see it hitting 90k, as thats not unheard of for luxury SUVs. Its easy to get an Escalade up near 100k.

Yeah, the original had the optional IFS and one speed Dana21 transfer case. Even the 70's had Quadratrac without low range as an option.

But the entire platform isn't just a modified truck chassis with a wagon body on it. So it's not really the same DNA as the SJ. It's going to be a full blown luxury SUV from the ground up. I could see the base model starting near the high end of the Grand Cherokee and option packages pushing it well over $100K. At least MSRP. Probably with steep discounts because after all, it's really just a Fiat.

There's going to be a huge image "hump" to get over here. Jeep has a pretty decent rep (relatively speaking), but Chryo/Fiat/etc. are not considered luxury brands in the US, at least not by anyone I know. Throwing a $100k Jeep out there is going to seriously limit the market. I know, they sell the Hell Cats and Demons are ludicrous prices, but the market for those is so small they can get away with it. And those are intended to be limited runs anyway, I would guess they'd like to sell more than a handful of the new Grand Wags.

Gonna be fun to watch the new lineup roll out over the next couple years.

I hate the idea only because doing 'google' searches for parts is already a pain. There was an XJ 'Wagoneer' and don't even get me started when it comes to searching for 'Cherokee' parts. :)

I had a guy behind the parts counter insist that there's no way I could have had a 1977 Cherokee since "they didn't start making them until 1984". He was a "Jeep Guy" who "knew what he was talking about".

When the manager told him to look it up anyway, I kept my mouth shut.

Good point.

As for the know-it-all "Jeep guy", I'm pretty mild mannered but that would have gotten a rise out of me. Not the "Jeep guy" comment, just he know it all attitude of a counter-jerk.

Yeah, I've run into more than one of "those guys" at parts stores. Usually though, in a good parts store, guys like that don't last long. And if they stick around, I find a different store. Fortunately for me, there's plenty to choose from.

Autozone seems to be the worst, ive gotten into arguments with them on two separate occasions about there not being a cherokee in 1983 only to tell them "well there's one sitting right outside your window" in their computers cherokee is at the top of the list and their mouse covers it up unless they take the time to read.

So its going to be a Jeep, 3 row SUV...and...no details yet? Probably based on whatever the next gen Grand Cherokee platform is with a small stretch (Like the XK Commander) and a steep pricetag?

More details creeping out.

https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/11/jee ... v-details/

So Grand Wagoneer seems like it's a done deal. It will be a large SUV competing with the big boys. An as-yet-unnamed 3 row SUV, probably based off the Grand Cherokee platform, will be coming out to compete in the part of the market where the Grand Cherokee doesn't exist (i.e. 3 row SUV).
