Hey all, I just bought some 17x9" wheels from Anthem off-road for my 1989 Grand Wagoneer. The backspacing on the wheels is 5". I'm pretty sure I'll need some wheel spacers to clear these wheels, but wanted to get a second opinion. At the moment I am only worrying about the wheels themselves fitting, as I have not decided on a tire size quite yet. Thanks!

Hmm, with that amount of backspacing, the obvious concern would be contact with parts. If not on initial fitment, obviously in turning. But you are thinking about spacers, potentially solving that issue. But you would probably need 1.25" spacers at least (my backspacing is 3.75" on an 8" wheel). At that point with the smaller openings in the GW, I would then be worried about the tires hitting the wheel opening in the rear due to them being on a 9" wheel. And last but not least, I have seen a few GWs with 16" wheels, but don't know how many I have seen with 17". Found this on the motherboard:
So looks like you can probably achieve what you want, but it might be tight. I believe the 17" wheel does look a little big for an application on a GW, but everyone has their own opinion I guess. If you like the wheels, then won't hurt to try. Just make sure you get some quality wheel spacers and use some loctite on your wheels studs when mounting them. I run spacers on my narrow track CJ and have not had any issues so far. Just check them about each oil change.
Yep, you'll definitely need some serious wheel spacers (pull the wheels and check the torque on the inner lugs often!). Also, most modern 17" wheels are hub centric, so you may need some soft of custom centering ring to make sure they don't wobble at speed. You'll also want to be sure the center bore is large enough to clear the hub.

I am very anti wheel-spacer. But if you must run them, they HAVE to be hub centric. Lots of chinese ones that arent. Finding hub-centric ones for our axles is actually kind of hard. As no modern vehicle uses our same hub bore size. And be sure to buy them from a company that has a decent reputation. WAY too many videos and photos of wheel spacers failing because they were cheaply made, not re-torqued often enough, or not hub centric. There are reasons they are banned in just about every form of motorsports.

I was looking at these ones. They seem to be hub-centric and from a reputable manufacturer.
Im more concern with the absence of material due to the multiple mount options! The one set of holes cut into the center void--yikes They do look good though..

Yeah, I have seen wheels that have two lug patterns, but never where they are so tight to each other, and cut into the center. Normally the two lug patterns split the difference so that there is equal amounts of material between the holes.

I've noticed that too. and I plan on talking with the company on it. I don't believe it should be an issue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No spacers . I do not want to die... I am up there on the lift .1 inch on the body for clearance to change my back 2 park plug thru fender well gap . And 1 inch above rear spare tire gas tank . Rear flip kit .SOA front . skyjacker 4 inch in springs in front. I am up there....
