Got to looking at my 79 Cherokee and noticed there wasn't any rubber bump stops on the front or back bumpers. I have a 3 piece bumper laying around that has them on it, and my 83 has the one piece bumper with the bump stops. On my 79 it doesn't look like there has ever been any on it. So my question is, is mine not supposed to have them on it? If not, what years are like mine. My bumpers are peeling pretty bad on the bottom and I'd like to swap them out with the body work I'll be doing this winter.
78 and older had the 3 piece steel bumper. In 79 the front of the frame changed and they moved to a single piece aluminum bumper. 79+ bumpers all mount up the same. Although J-Truck/WT Chero bumpers are wider than Wagoneer Bumpers.
Depends on trim I think. I have not seen them before ‘83. But have seen Jeeps made after then without them.
Another difference for ‘79 is the bumpers were chromed. They only did this for one year as the chrome started to peel, and there was no real reason as aluminum doesn’t rust.
79 bumpers with no rubber were a one year only deal. They used chromed aluminum, while the 80+ are polished aluminum that are clear coated and have the rubber. 80+ bolt on to 79, but not 78 and below.
Hmmm. So I bet the odds of finding a non peeling, 79 bumper without the stops is going to be slim to non existent. Has anyone had one if these rechromed?
Odds are slim. I gave up for my 79. I got an 80+ that was chrome powdercoated like I had done to my wheels. I was quoted $325 to rechrome locally, but it turns out the bumper was too corroded to chrome at all.
Not all 80+ bumpers have the stops. My J10 doesn't have them, and as I recall most J-Trucks and Cherokees that are 80+ did not have them. So you should be able to easily find a bumper without stops, but it won't be chromed.
And my '79 Golden Eagle did not either, but I think that is because it has a brush guard.
BUT!
My '79 Wagoneer did have them

Sorry, I was referring to rear bumpers specifically. No 79s had any rubber on rear bumpers. The wagoneer had the center rubber bumpers, but not the ones that wrap around the sides. Wagoneers from 80+ had full rubber front and rear, and cherokees did not. J10s did or did not depending on package.
