Re: 1965 Super Wagoneer Resto-Mod Build: 3:1

Post by Stuka »

The rear of the i6 is farther back into the engine bay than the rear of a V8, which then moves the trans forward.

The ranger would push things back and basically act like the long input shaft/spacer that factory V8 manuals used. But yeah, a Jeep T18a from a V8 would be a cheaper route.

Yeah, the I6 is narrower and fits back up against the hump in the firewall. Roughly 2.5-4 inches of a difference.

To keep the manual tranny closer to where I would want it in the cab requires the Ranger no matter what tranny I pick. So either way, I'm leaning toward the Ranger.

The t90 I have sat in pretty much the same spot in that waggie as the t18 currently does in my truck. My t90 is the J version specifically for the FSJ rigs with the longer output shaft.

The T18 is pretty much a 3 speed on the street because of that low 1st gear. I don't do a lot of hardcore wheeling anymore and seldom use 1st gear in the truck.

If I had a chance to do the t18/401 combo over, I would've went for a 5 speed, or 6 speed for more options in shifting on and off road.

So I wouldn't want to put the t18 in the wagoneer unless it had the Ranger, too. I actually have a spare T18/Dana 20 combo complete with bellhousing and the spacer, too. But that's earmarked for a friend's FSJ. I really have no interest in re-doing a T-18 install for reasons already mentioned.

Here's an old pic of the Super console I had in my truck for awhile with the t18 shifter located in what was the stock location:

Not pretty. Hahaha.

All in all, no matter what manual tranny is used, to get the shifter to where I want it to be the Ranger is needed for moving any manual tranny shifter back to the sweet spot. More importantly, though, I also want it for more shifting options. Same money out the door either way with the t90, or the T18. Also just as much money to buy a 5, or 6 speed w/the correct transfer case and get that all to fit into the Super, too.

My buddy tried to get me to put in a SM420 instead of any other tranny. Hahaha. Year 67 is the one everyone wants.

I do have some time to consider all my options and recalculate the math/expense as nothing can really get done until my recovery from surgery.

I picked up most the interior pieces and 1/2 the exterior trim pieces I needed today (plus some extras!).

I've been doing A LOT of research into the Ranger overdrive and have found that they don't make a unit for the Jeep T-18 and the ones for the Ford T-18 will not bolt to a Jeep T-18 without some work ($$$). What's needed are a Ford/Jeep adapter plate between the trans and Ranger unit, Ford input shaft swap, Jeep T-176 bellhousing, and a Ford/AMC adapter pilot bearing.
Also, the Ranger units are rather noisy. If you have a chance check them out on YouTube. Loud. I have emailed Steve at Advanced Adapters about this and they are aware of this and don't seem to care to try and fix it saying it is normal.
For these reasons I am on the fence about using the Ranger or using an NV4500.

EDIT:
I failed to see you are running a GM drive train. Disregard my psycho-babble.

NV 4500 may be easier to deal with. And since the shifter sits rearward a good bit, it may fit easier. Down side is its BIG and HEAVY. Probably less than a T18 and the ranger though.
I'd go NV, bolt a Dana 300 behind it, swap in a passenger side front, and enjoy.
Hopefully you don't encounter the dreaded NV missing 5th gear issue too.

1965 Super Wagoneer Resto-Mod Build: 3:1

I dig the t-18, but mating it to a SBC isn’t in the cards for this build- mainly due to all the complications that come with it.

I’ve seen a few videos of the Ranger in action, most of the rigs that have them seem loud, but not due to the Ranger. Haha. The buddy who has one in his Willy’s Wagon never talked about the noise- just the expense.

I do have a spare Dana 300, though. The 66 and 62 trucks have that t case, so a spare seems like a good idea. Maybe a 3500 is a realistic swap.

I’d prefer to use the GM NV3500, or Jeep’s 3550(?) but t case options are slim for a passenger’s side drop. I didn’t want to do an axle swap to get a driver’s side drop front axle either.

The NV4500 are worth their weight in gold around here. Maybe finding a 1991, or newer rig to donate it’s soul is an option. 350/sm465 chevys pop up every two weeks around here including TBI set ups. The bad news is the usually have high mileage engines.

We jaunted over to North Bend for a NV4500 mated to the Dana 20 Transfer Case for a reasonable price. Glad there were 3 guys to lift it for me into the Wrangler.

62 when shopping for new shoes; we both got something, hahaha.

Edit:

Sunday cleaning today- stashing the Super parts. All I’m missing now are the two thinner exterior chrome pieces that are mounted on the bottom edge of the passenger side doors (passenger front and passenger rear).

How do you always luck into the parts you need? I can search and search and put up multiple wanted ads and never find what I need. Great score on that NV4500/D20 combo. It's exactly what I've been looking for and can't find for my project. That or a used Ranger OD unit lol

Haha, I’m not sure how I do it. Maybe my all jeep build (66 Thriftside, 401/T18/Dana 300/8 lug j20 axles) pleased the Jeep gods and they continue to bless me with what I need? Hahahaha. I don’t really know how I luck out. I certainly am content with the pace I am finding the parts I need, though.

I did find this set up on the other side of our state- 9 hours round trip to get it. My son (62thriftside) drove there and back. I had to search Seattle Craigslist for it using “NV4500” in the search box.

I’ve never found an used Ranger Unit for sale on the net, that would be a great score.

I am on the hunt for a 4.8-5.3 liter Chevy to round out the drivetrain.

Maybe the ratio is no longer 3:1.

Here’s truck donating the 5.3 and related pieces.

True. No title due to a nasty divorce by the PO. Everything on that truck is up for sale- minus the engine needed components for the swap into the Super.

I landed a 77 Wag body; it has 401, th400 combo- but I only want the Jeep’s body for the body swap on to the frame.

It’ll be interesting to see how well the body mounts to the frame and what the differences are.

A buddy of mine wants the axles, engine and tranny for his son’s build, so it worked out perfectly. It’ll be stored on his property until Spring. Even better! Haha

We have a 5.3 powered Tahoe in the shop. Not sure what exhaust is on it but it sure sounds rumbly!

Yeah, right? His 2010 Chevy also sounds just as nice. He said this one has been “chipped”.

Edit:

I’m storing the NV on the frame until I can get to the project. This is a big beast- overkill for my needs.

A mix bag of resurrection and destruction today as the snow flies outside.

The 2001 Z71 drivetrain provider is slowly being parted out locally, so I can get some kind of organization out of the chaos. So far, my body is holding up, haha.
