I gave Mars a descent paper original from an 80's model.

He was going to try to fold one up with sheet metal.

I bought BJ's plastic replacement, it looks grand, but was a real chore to install. I installed it with the dash on the bench inserting it from the back side.

I know that people here have installed it from the front, but I could not imagine how.

I do not know if a sheet metal version would be easier, but if it were made a bit smaller....

Just my thoughts...

Tips for installing from the front: don't

Drop the AC unit and do it right. Yes, it is a hassle.

A new cardboard glove box insert is enough of a pain from the front, I can't imagine trying to shove a plastic one thu that hole!

Good suggestions on installing the new plastic glove box.

I ended up rigging the stock one and then took out the heavy stuff.

I didn't think I had time to receive one from BJ's.

You can install from the front w/o removing the a/c. You remove the door and hinges if possible (makes it easier) and remove the latch assembly & light from the top (some don't have the light). Then, after letting the glovebox sit in the sun for a few hours to warm up (inside if cold out), bend it gently into a trapezoidal shape and gently push it through the opening with one side at a time. Takes some patience, but can be done (I've personally installed several that way).

That came out wrong. It was supposed to read the only way possible is from the front if you have AC unless you tear it out.

Yeah I actually bought the plastic one from BJ's but was not in the mood to try and fit it. In the end I knocked up a neat unit from some alloy sheet, using the old cardboard one as a template.
Tip - cover the top edge with some electrical tape, otherwise you might short out the glovebox light. Lesson leant - ;)

If you're going to make one of out metal, I'd look at making it "foldable", with holes that line up with the original holes in the cardboard glovebox. You could slip it through the opening at an angle, unfold it and then install the screws. Permanent fix.

A set of hinges wouldn't be that much, but the engineering might not be doable.

I made mine out of alum. and installed from the back side. Down side of using metal or alum is the noise
factor. I used thin leather an lined it, and that work fine.
