Jeep FIA Rally Racing

Post by Yeller »

I'm heavy into the Early Bronco community and everyone talks about their desert racing heritage. No denying it helped put the bronco in the spotlight that it holds today. But our beloved Full Size Jeeps had their hay day in Rally racing!

I had heard of Moby Dick1 but never seen anything in writing about it. Hope others find this as interesting and fun as I did.

Any other Racing history out there? Post up! I know there is some Baja stuff out there somewhere.

This has been posted a few times before, but its still a fantastic read, and worth reposting. A lot of people give credit to Audi for the first AWD WRC car. But it was not the first AWD vehicle to ever race in rally.

There were/are quite a few FSJs that raced in Baja. I had a poster in the early 90s as a kid that had a J10, an XJ, and a brand new '93 ZJ that were being actively raced in the Baja 1000. Really wish I had still it.

Here it is again:

I'm sure you've seen my post in the dream FSJ column about a rally FSJ. Here's a shot of the '70s Cherokee. If you do some research on the main driver highlighted in that article (his name is escaping me ATM), he went on to race SX4 Eagles in rally.

I love seeing all the hacks and tricks on the old racecars, and have been pretty into the Le Mans/Ford v. Ferrari stuff for a long time, but lately I've been getting much more into the rally/Baja type stuff.

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

Here's a snippet from SEMA 2021 that shows some nice vintage pieces.

Brian Chuchua raced a bunch of stuff, some of which were FSJ's been looking for some articles, He did own a Jeep dealership. He's an ORMHOF inductee, which is really cool. I feel fortunate to have been able to spend time with several ORMHOF inductees.
