electric choke wire exposed

Post by ScottinTexas »

while replacing our negative battery cable this weekend we found the electric choke wire has parts that don't have insulation.

I'm thinking this is not good and could short out, just looking for confirmation that the whole wire needs to be replaced,

yes, not good, in fact the OE connector has a plastic case, so it is disconnected and drop on the engine, it is less likely to short and do BBQ.

I do not have a pict of that part.

but here is one example, scroll to post #5

It's just a wire. Replace it with the same size automotive primary wire. NB these choke wires are known for shorting out and making a melted mess. Not fuse protected. Search old posts and you'll find some discussion.

Per Michel's comment, it should have a connector like this I presume.

Or use a regular crimp connector and cover any exposed metal with heat shrink tubing.

Thanks, I just couldn't believe there was that much insulation missing, I put a couple wraps of electrical tape around it just in case,

We'll be replacing it,

I had read a lot of posts about the fire danger and adding a fuse, I guess I should have moved it further up the priority list,
