i need help determining the YEAR of my 2nd J200...

Post by jeeprcreeprz »

i recently bought this 196? J200 Gladiator...

i have all the paperwork needed to get a replacement title, but i cannot figure out exactly which year this truck is?

here is the vin: 2406A 19656 - 5 digit sequential vin series (every website i searched said something DIFFERENT!!!)

No side "safety" marker lights or reflectors on front or rear fenders, soooo.... PRE 1968 yah...

"KAISER / JEEP CORPORATION TOLEDO OHIO" tin vin plate still attached to driver's side door post = 1963 and newer

so, its a 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, or a 1967 pretty guaranteed...

any help is GREATLY appreciated...

Any details on what engine/trans/rear axle it has?

If the sequential SN is correct, its a '65 or older. Which should mean its a 230 i6. And a J200 C&C truck (no bed). So should be a flat bed, tow truck, etc.

hi stutka, thank you!

yes, the serial number is still on door post by hinge and it appears to be the original vin tag, as far as i can tell.

it has an older v8 in it now, but i don't think it's original to this truck

i haven't gotten the axle, trans info yet, as the truck is still in the farmer's field where i bought it...

it does have a factory fleetside bed on it that APPEARS to be original to the truck

i'll get drive line and axles info when i pick it up in a few weeks...

thank you!

To the OP, do you know about the tech library at the mother ship?

http://www.ifsja.org/tech/figures/index.html

This is correct AFAIK. Whatever online "VIN decoders" you are looking at probably don't have a clue about these older oddball vehicles.

My interpretation of 2406A is a truck with a cab and any bed configuration, not a cab and bare chassis. Has to be, since there is no corresponding number for a Townside or Thriftside truck with a bed of either style, and there is a 2418 code for an explicitly bare chassis. Plus I have not seen any low-GVWR trucks (5600 is low) delivered without a bed. Possible if destined for a service body, but those are heavy for that GVWR.

There is a parts manual at the Tom Collins site https://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html that should be the definitive VIN reference, but it appears to be missing the 230-era information.

I have some production records for the early ones, your gladiator was produced in december 1964, so it's a '65 with a Tornado engine and it's one of the last J200s before their replacement by the J2000s
