Loose Steering Column Fix?

Post by deckroid »

Hey all,

I am finally getting around to the some of the fixes to my 1984 GW. A few years ago, I came across a post that talked about 3 bolts that will help tighten the column up from being all loosey-goosey. I have to lift the steering wheel up about a half inch when starting to engage whatever loose connection there is (also on the list) that prevents it from hitting the starter. I told the Mrs it was theft deterrent. From the look I got... well, we've all been there.

Anyway, this coming weekend I am going to pull the steering wheel and start looking at what's what, but before doing that I would like some advice, direction or flat out photos with colored arrows with "Here, Stoopid" pointing to what I am looking for! LOL. Or maybe just a link to that post... I have been searching the site for the last hour.

Thanks!

George

I did this 18 months ago. You can only access 1 of the 3 fasteners without removing the Pivot pins. You'll need the pin removal tool https://www.ebay.com/itm/384837026413?h ... Sw1JViWd8W
Get the tool first because its a lot of work to access those fasteners and you dont want to do it twice.

Have you already tried to adjust the start switch under the dash?

I would, as it is much easier than digging into the column first.

Thanks for all the info...

The starter switch was loose, but still had "issues". I have the removal tool... bought it when I got the steering wheel removal tool. It was a "Just in case" purchase.

I found a video for a 70s GM steering column. I think these are close enough in design to be helpful.
