Early J series tailgate value

Post by scoobydoo »

I recently purchased an early J series Tailgate, I was just going to hang it on the wall in my barn as art.
But then I got thinking this might be pretty valuable to someone who needs one for their truck.

The tailgate is probably as close to mint condition as you could expect to find for being at least 50 years old.
Literally not a single dent or ding of any kind, ZERO rust
Even the original paint is in great shape (any lighter areas you see in the pics are from the sunlight coming through the trees)
I got it from a shelf in a barn in Arizona where the original owner said it had been stored for at least 30 years
He thought it was from a 1961, but his memory is not that great, and from looking at pics online I think he may have meant to say 1971 ???

1) My question is what years and models would this fit ?
2) What is it worth ?
("whatever some is willing to pay for it" is not helpful)

I am thinking about putting it on Ebay & Craig's list, but would consider selling it here first is someone truly needs it for their truck

Suggest you pick a price and put it in the parts-for-sale forum here. There were not a huge number of these trucks made, so even if your guess is reasonable, it may take a while to sell it. Add some measurements and let the seller determine whether it fits or not.

Also realize that these trucks are not collectible like the Wagoneers, so don't imagine an astronomical price. The Jeep trucks are oddballs, and generally don't command high prices.

If it's for a J-truck, there is a parts book for these vehicles on the Tom Collins site. That might give you an idea of what years it is for. Group 31. 1961 is too early for the Jeep trucks this forum covers; mid-60s maybe. Right style for '71, if the width is right. I'd look at the online paint swatch sites and see if I can find the color. Not a '71 color, I'd guess. Might be a fleet color, ie forest service.

I too am interested as I am rebuilding the bed on my 71. That would save me a lot of welding.

The OP only has one post so he may not be able to send PMs. Not sure what the rules are about receiving mail - typically you can't originate PMs until you have a few forum posts. Those interested may want to try sending a PM, or asking the mod (Stuka) for help.

'63-'72 thank you that is very helpful :)

I am in Prescott Arizona, I have never tried shipping anything as heavy as this, but I imagine it would cost quite a bit.

I have had a CJ a YJ and 3 TJ's but never any Jeep trucks.
And LOTS of 64-72 Chevy muscle cars & trucks. (So I know what it is like to run across a perfect factory tailgate in these years

That Gate is GOLD! Put it up for auction on Ebay with a $1000 "Reserve" to find out what the market is willing to pay. I sold a set of Rust Free rear Cherokee fenders for $2400 on auction. IMO, that gate is worth > $500 any day.

Maybe. Last tailgate I bought less than a decade ago - later type - was in excellent condition and I think I paid $150.

I'd give 3-400 for it.
