Hello FSJ network, This is my first post, and I had a question. I recently purchased 2 J trucks, I am completely going through one of them, (building one , cause dad had one) and now I understand why he pulled the inline 6 and went chevy v8, and my question is what is the original 81' AMC 258 worth (complete) fan to flywheel? Gonna post it on CL or MARKETPLACE, it ran fine for a 6, I personally cant stand em. Thank you in advance

Not an answer to your question, but just noting that I moved this topic to General FSJ, as it was originally posted in Forum Related.
If the truck that had the 258 in it was mostly a farm truck, the 258 would be preferred, as they run forever with excellent low rpm torque.
Hiway driver.....yes the V8 would be preferred in an FSJ.
Advertise in jeepforum classifieds, as the 258 is perfect for the CJ crowd.

Thanks, its probably going to the scrap pile, (didnt video it running)
But with that engine, it cant get out of it's own way, sure was quiet though, quietest vehicle at my place anyways!
That is just my $.02, and sure if you put it out there, someone will take it off your hands quick, and give you something for it.
Probably for more than my uneducated estimate.
Not many of these left, and lots of CJ people looking for them, so asking not to scrap it....yet?
Wish I was closer to you than AZ :/

I recently bought one for $600. Been looking for a long time, Craigslist and Marketplace. Asking price for a 4.2 or 4.0 is around 900-1000 (what I'm seeing, not what they are getting). I took a gamble on this one, haven't heard it run. Went through it with new gaskets, seals and timing chain. Already swapped, should have it running soon.
You are right, they are slow. The original engine ran butter smooth, but nothing I tried could make it accelerate fast enough to be safe merging. I'm hoping this one will have a bit more pep. This is in a Wag, not a truck.
I start what I finish.

Glad to hear you found one Curly, and hope it fits your driving needs perfectly

Well if anyone wants it, I would be glad to donate it, no joke, it ran fine for what it is. Needs some new gaskets, and last owner did some creative carb repairs, I gave it new plugs, cap and rotor, replaced the smog pump with an idler pulley, new belt, alternator, starter. I'm in the central valley California, if anyone wants it, just taking up space next to the garage

A couple guys reached out and let me know about this one. I had been trying to find a good running 258 with a 5speed and xfer case for my '74 J10. A 258 should be much better on fuel than the 401 in it now. And would be cheaper to drive and it's longevity drastically improved when it gets converted to propane.
If you don't have a trans and case then I will keep looking for those. I'm working on getting something transported from the Redondo Beach area and could arrange pick up of this on the northbound leg.
Thanks to all of you who worked to help the OP and I to connect :bigbeer:
