Power steering stuck

Post by Normanator »

Was bleeding my power steering system (needed a new return hose). Wheel turned easy lock to lock with the pitman arm disconnected, fluid level was holding steady. Fired the engine up, wheel spun to the left, and now I cannot turn it either way regardless of engine on/off...
Pitman still disconnected, I cracked a line to let some pressure off, nada...
Any ideas before I pull the whole thing and try to flush it and start over?

The spool valve has failed....you're lucky it did happen while driving....I'd say time to have the box rebuilt...you can get one already rebuilt BUT it will probably be a three bolt mount instead of a four bolt...I'd look into having yours rebuilt...

Appreciate the input, was considering a newer box anyway, but was unsure what was a bolt in fit for these older ones with the flange style hoses vs the newer o-ring style

Or is a kit available to rebuild yourself?

You can reseal them, even replace the sector shaft bearing but beyond that it really takes some specialized tooling to get them 100%. I looked really hard at doing a power steering company years ago, it’s not like rebuilding a transmission. There is a reason there are not many shops exist. Look at Redhead, Blue top, Lee’s, West Texas Off-road or a brand new unit from Borgeson.
The bus I ride is so short it is a yellow Smart Car full of squirrels, monkeys and clowns.
