I'm wanting to put a fuel tank where the spare tire goes on my 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I see that people are using the 42 gallon tank from a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban. I'm afraid that it will hang down too far. Is there an alterative to this tank? I' running a carburetor at this time but future plans are to go to fuel injection. Thank you in advance for any information I get,

Here's the one I did. Some things could probably be improved but it still works. Probably the cheapest option and it will set you up nicely for EFI or a swap if you go that route in the future.

Thanks for this write up. I searched for something like this, but never found it. Appreciate the time you took to out this together. Especially the parts list.

I used a late-90's (96, I think) F150/Bronco 19-gal tank. I wish I had more range, but it sits up tight in the frame rails. We did have to trim a very little to get it to clear the frame rails. This was back in '06-ish, so I dont recall a lot of detail.
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.

If you want highish clearance, to bob your bed and need 20gals of storage - I went with the 1970 Chevy Nova tank from Tanks Inc for my LS Swap (Which is now running!).
I did the suburban tank. I dont have a pic handy but it doesn't hang too low in my opinion. I put it up there sideways and relocated the filler so i can ise the original filler neck location. Made a couple straps and thats it.
The one noted in my write-up (97 2-door Blazer) fit between the frame rails without cutting in my '89. I do recall having to slide in either the passenger or driver's side first to clear the lip on the frame, then move that side against the frame, raise the other side, and then split the difference between the frames. At that point, I think the gas tank seam/lip can rest on the frame during the install.
