Replaced ignition switch, now it won't turn

Post by Beanpatch »

My 1980 J-10 and I are in need of your help.
I needed to replace the ignition switch, (thanks to the advice on here) so I took everything off, including the cast piece that holds the ignition switch, which I now realize was a mistake.
I managed to get the old ignition switch out and the new one in, but now the key will not turn.
It seems the gear on the back of the switch cannot get the bar to move.
I am at a loss. What do I need to do next oh great and wise ones?

Hi - Don't know specifically what your issue is. However, I would point out that the TSM has thorough instructions for the steering column, including the ignition switch. If you have not looked, most of the '82 TSM is here: https://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html This will be the same as what you have in your '80 truck. Go to section 2J and read up - might help!

I slid the ignition switch all the way forward, then backed it up 2 clicks. I then installed the rod in the hole and bolted it back on. No problems doing it this way.

Thank you Texxxan and tgreese! The manuals were a great help.
I figured out the issue with the key, the rod and teeth that lock the wheel had slipped forward, so they were holding the key in position.
Have that part remedied, now just to try and put it all back together. The diagrams are a HUGE help.
Thanks again.
