Is there a source for listing the major component compatibility between different J10 and Wagoneer parts around the 1979 years?
For example: The hood is identical on J10, J20 from 197?? to 197??
And, not really. You can always ask here, and many of us know all the major parts. Be it body, or drive train. There are some specific 'eras' that FSJ's went through.
For your hood question, 79-91 is roughly the same for all FSJs. Only difference that comes to mind is a hole for the grand wagoneer hood emblem, and some years had trim along the side of the hood for Wagoneer Limited models. Old hood will bolt right up. But many will have the hood bar that was used with other grills.
For drive train stuff, you would be interested in 74-79. These used the same axles, engines, transmissions, and transfer cases. Though 74-75 had different rear suspension.
Right now I'm trying to collect a list of missing parts for the 79 J10. I have not dug too deep into repair or replace of parts that are there.
Some specific ones in need are:
Side door mirrors, trailer / 3 point mount style. Need drivers side. what year models were the same?
Stainless body trim for J10, "J" trim on front passenger. what were equivalent year models?
Air cleaner assy for 5.9L 360 V8, same question...
Roll bar assy that mounts in the bed...
Side mirrors are aftermarket AFAIK. There was probably a "Jeep Authorized Special Equipment" variety but no guarantee that's what you have. Check the tow truck supply places for a variety.
Trim, junkyard or part-out. Don't know - you'll need to research the compatible years from pictures in sales literature, I presume. Parts book research might help.
Junkyard or part-out again. Should be easy. Look at the parts books or compare the TSM pictures to what's available.
No source other than old or custom. Check for local 4x4 hobbyists in your area that fab roll bars, sliders, bumpers, etc.
1980 is a watershed year for these Jeeps, with major changes in drivetrain and equipment. Most likely '80 and newer will be different. '74-79 are near identical mechanically.
The TSM and '74-80 parts book are available at RockAuto on CD-ROM. Not expensive.
