Gearing on a 90 ?

Post by candymancan »

Was reading this article on axle gearing for FSJs and tire sizes.. and it mentioned to not go over stock tire size with 2.73 gearing. And 3.31 would be good for up to 31..

Well i want 31s on my Jeep and im getting 2 inch AAL lift for the front and back . After i fix my frame by the gas tank soon.

But im starting to wonder what gearing would my 90 Have ? When i did the diff fluid awhile back when i first got it. I noticed it had the limited slip tag on it but the long tag for the axle ratio was too rusted for me to see what it was. I was told back then that the limited slips were 2.73. So if this is the case can i not go 31s lol ?

Also I wish i took a better look but do cherokee golden eagles have 44 rear and fronts ? Wouldnt i be able to just take the gears outa a 79 i found and swap em into my 90 ? Would it be a direct fit ? Ive never done this before so just curious. Not sure what the eagle has for gearing.. but im sure its better then 2.72/3 whatever it is lol

3.31 was available on Grand Wagoneers that came equipped with the tow package. The standard gear ratio was 2.73, so you got the better of the two.

A '79 would have either 3.07 or 3.54 gears.

Okay thanks. I just wasnt sure if that says 3.31 or not its so rusted and it has 20 other numbers.. just wanted to be sure. Mine does have all the wiring and plug in the back for trailers so i guess that also answers that.

Just no hitch.. all it had were remnants of a hitch once being there.

I still wonder if i should go back and look to see what the 79 has. If its got 3.54 would it be worth taking thrm.. Maybe for the future ?

There isn't that much difference between 3.31 and 3.54. Sounds like a lot of work for little gain with taller tires.

The cost to rehear to 3.54 would not nearly be worth it. The gears themselves are pretty cheap even new. It’s the labor that is costly. They are not a simple bolt in item.
