V style trailer hitch. How much weight can they handle ?

Post by candymancan »

Just got a V style hitch from a 79 cherokee. Ive had the U style hitch once but i sold it awhile back to someone on here because i needed the money.

So yea this one seems fairly heavy duty was held on by 6 bolts all i had to cut off. I kinda like this one better as it isnt as obvious looking like the big U shaped one. It also isnt hollow allowing internal rust.. Its like Two V shaped I beams. The sticker is still on it saying Jeep. Class (? Unknown as its rubbed off) says two weights on it. One is 7500lbs saying Distribution weight. The other says 3500lbs static weight or something like that have to look at it again to be surr.

But i know it says 7500 and 3500.

So how much weight can this hitch handle safely ? I mean im not gonna tow 7500lbs lol or even 5000lbs but i might do 1500-3000 in the future

That’s 3500 with a standard hitch, and 7500 with a weight distribution hitch. Both are most likely higher than what the rest of the rig can handle.

V hitch can do the job, but our brakes are iffy... transmission survived... it was in the middle of winter with a light snow drizzle at some point, I still had to pull over when my feet started to feel the heat... and yes I drained all the trans fluid , pan, filter and disconnected the trans cooler for a full circulation purge after that 200 mile adventure!

Sure it is, but keeping it cool is a must. If it gets too hot, the fluid will break down which then causes other issues. Although it doesn't sound like you will be towing 5k pounds. Should not need to worry with just a small utility trailer.

Dont all our Jeeps come with a fairly good sized transmission cooler that also goes into the radiator. Can always add an even bigger trans cooler if needed
