Catalytic converter

Post by HowardT64 »

Hey Folks!!!

Well the Wag is back up and running and I think the last bit I need to do is get the old converter off and put my new one on. I have a place here that will do it for 75$ but being El Cheapo....scratch that, the industrious person I am, Id like to do it myself. Im thinking of getting a sawzall next month and cutting it off.

Before I do that, I need to get clamps and couplers so that it will match up.

Anyone know what size I need?

Thanks in advance :) :D

you can rent the cutting tool from vatozone for free. and get the appropriate clamps... but it may leak a bit... the muffler place will weld the joints leakfree. You may have an air pipe that need to be welded as well.... so in the end $75 may not be such a bad deal.

Clamp size is 2 1/2", some brands are better than others... nikson industry had some HD ones bought outside my local area shop

stainless band clamps or even steel band clamps are way to go for diy. Don't crush pipes and don't leak.

But $75 just to weld one in is high shop around.

I used regular clamps but i probly shoulds used the flat steel band clamps.. ive used em before on the camaros exhaust when i put on the borla mufflers. Oh well.

I do recomend you get stainless steel clamps though if you do get thrm.. the cheap regular steel ones.. are utter BEEP.. like the worst chinese crap steel you can find.. They rust out in a year..

As for a cat i got a magnaflow stainless steel fully welded cat. Muffler is a flowmaster welded.. I hate cheapo mufflers and cheapo cats.. they arent welded.. they are crimped or stamped together.. and rust out in a few years..

As of this morning, I dumped a quart of lacquer thinner in the tank and put in some fresh gas. I can see and smell a difference already. I got her up to 75, feels like I already have some power back. No popping so far. I am thinking the lacquer will clean the system out and the valves as well. Ill keep you all posted :)
