RPM’s creeping up on highway, bad torque converter?

Post by Nikkormat »

Among other problems my th400 has been experiencing recently I’ve noticed my highway cruising RPM is slowly climbing. Normally my Jeep runs about 2600 rpm at 65 mph. Over the past week it has crept up to 2750, then 2900, and now I’m turning 3100 rpm at 65 mph. What gives? Is my torque converter on its way out again? Or is third gear slipping?

I’ve noticed my cruising speed in second gear has been hurt by a few hundred RPM as well. The trans has only 15k miles on it since a full professional rebuild but it has started intermittently loosing third gear due to an internal hydraulic leak.

Watching this thread as my truck started doing the same thing last week.

Do you have a transmission temp gauge? If it is slipping it will be getting hot.

Are you low on fluid?

Fluid full, IR temp gun shows a pan temp of 220 after a long spirited drive.

Interestingly the transmission stopped blowing fluid out of the dipstick.

My fluid was a half-pint below full (halfway between full and add). Topped it off yesterday but, haven't driven on the highway yet. Seemed alright to and from work but, that's about 45mph at the most.

220 is a bit warm. It may indicate some slipping of the transmission or torque converter. This was an interesting read:

3rd gear has returned, but my rpms still seem higher than normal. I’m going to run it until it dies and swap in something new.

Noticed mine was already very low on fluid a couple days ago so added some. After adding it I looked under the truck, only to see most of the fluid I'd just added pouring onto the ground. Turned out to be a loose cooler line fitting. One thread holding it. Barely touched it and it came out all the way. Might be a good idea to check yours.
