oil pan removal

Post by orange65 »

New to the site. Have a "87 GW and am not having any luck removing the oil pan. Everything on the front of the engine has been removed, the GW is on jack stands under the frame to let the suspension hang, I've disconnected the "Y" pipe from the manifolds. All the pan bolts are off, but it is getting hung up at the back against the transmission. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site. Is the pan 'free' from the engine block but you can't wiggle it out of place or does it stuck in place in the back?

Thanks for getting back to me. The pan is free from the block, front is hanging down 6in. I can move it up and down in the front and wiggle a little side to side.

Did you remove the inspection cover off the transmission? Just stabbing in the dark with an idea that I’ve run into before

Yes, tranny cover is off. This all started with a coolant leak from the bottom left corner of the timing cover. I figured if I was in that deep I would replace as many seals and gaskets as I could without removing the motor. Everything else went off without a hitch except for the oil pan.

Is it loose at the back and hanging by some distance or does it hinge down, like it's still held up to the block?

I would say it is hinging down.

Not just held by gasket cement? The rear main seal is back there, and a previous mechanic could have gooped it more or better holding gasket cement at that location. You could try making it move side to side, with a rubber mallet or such.

The pickup for the oil fits into a hole in the pan. Hopefully this picture will work. So you need to get the pickup past the hole and then I think you can slide/twist it out.

Boy that's one clean oil pan! Success! I ended up persuading it out with a small pry bar. Looks like it was just extra gasket cement. I want to thank everyone for their help. Until next time...

I am glad you got it off! It can be a real pain and I am always worried I will ruin something if I try too much force.

Hey, post up another thread with pics of your rig. Again, welcome to the board. We love pics!
