Quest to score a new FSJ...

Post by Phils67 »

For a few years I have been looking at a yellow early small window step side FSJ truck in the weeds on the side of the road, left a note about 2 years ago for them to call if they want to part with it and kinda forgot about it. Tonight at work I was thinking about it randomly out of nowhere, because my brain.is always thinking about Jeep stuff I guess, but decided while on my break to start researching the property lines. Well come to find out it is smack dab in the middle of the local gas and electric company owned property along their powerlines. I guess I'll have to call the power company tomorrow and see if they can tell me anything about it. I will offer to remove it for free and see what they say. It's worth a shot. Maybe I can even get some paperwork from them somehow. In NY all you need is a bill of sale or paper from the owner of the property and a VIN scratch to get paperwork. Honestly I want it for the bed more than anything and to use it for a parts donor. I can get paperwork to a FSJ and a vin plate to match worst case from a friend of mine. It's pretty overgrown but from what i can see it isnt terrible. Just felt like putting it out there and see if anyone else has gone through similar situations for a Jeep

Theres a J2000 on the side of HW60 in Bartow Fl. Everyone knows about it but never follow up on it's status. So, I drive up on it to see if I can locate the owner, only to find that its on a small lot on the far side of the street up against the highway easement [to small to build on-too close to the highway]. However, I assume that the lot is owned by the house on the other side of the road [not highway]. As I walk up to the property, I see multiple postings "Owner Has Guns, No Trespassing, violators will be shot, Do not disturb". Ah-Oh.. So, I look to the left and see a normal property with people on the porch and ask them about the truck and the Crazy Hermit. They said that it is his truck but doesnt talk to anyone. Hmm? I gave the neighbors my card and said Id pay them $50 if they could get me in contact with the owner and I buy it. Never heard from the owner--the truck is still sitting there 7 years later.

Do you ever see the guy outside? Maybe roll the window down and yell to him. Alot of the people with those kinds of signs 9 times out of 10 won't shoot you.

Just did a driveby and went and took pics despite it being posted and rainy today. It is a J200, the bed is surprisingly decent, cab is completely trashed and mostly rotted away. I have to get my FSM out and try to decipher the vin and see what I can learn about it. Called the power company and left a message for the foreman who my father personally knows since he retired from the power company a few years ago. Waiting on a call back. My father said if anyone can get that truck for me it will be this guy so fingers are crossed. The truck isn't worth saving but the bed is. Figure I can pull the bed and any other savable parts off of it and junk the rest if I can even get the truck ImageImageImage

Thats a cool truck. I also have a soft spot for the small window thrift sides.

Shame about all the rust, but the cab at least is something that can be changed out and have the small window back piece grafted in to a large window cab. The bed is the most rare part.

That's mostly what I am after, and the small window will definitely be cut out if I score it as a parts donor. Couldn't really get to the front due to over growth of weeds so no idea what the front looks like. The floors, cab corners, rockers, and interior are non existent. Driver window is down, weeds are growing into the cab through the floor up to the roof lol. The bed looks to be rock solid

Can anyone help me decode the VIN/serial to figure out year and options? All I know is it is a J200 with a 5600lb gvw. 2406A 18833. My FSM doesnt list it.

Also while doing all of this i have determined my 67 was built in Sept of '66 going by the vent glass LOF code AA7 and Vin/Sn 2406x201127. Making mine the 127th out of 138 built as a 2406x in Sept 66. Early jeep vins fascinate me.

My decoding makes the yellow thriftside the 213th truck 2406A built in Oct 64. 10/64 started with SN# 18670 and ended 19155 So it's a late 64/early 65 truck. Cool!

Yeah, not much more to it than you've already figured out; here's the page from the factory manual, showing it as the 5600lb GVWR 4x4 short wheelbase truck:

Cool thanks, I didn't pay attention to the transmission because it was pouring rain. Just a quick glance to see the interior was absolutely destroyed and mostly non-existent. 230 was the only option then so engine I narrowed down, and had 4wd badges over the J200 badge so it's definitely not a rare 2wd. Most likely a manual trans. If it was a 2wd I would try to save it only because of the rarity, but this is in NY so most sold here were 4wd. I still want it as a parts donor if nothing else. What year did the small window cab end? 65?

I am also fascinated by early FSJs ;-) , i have three of them. I have the same decoding for the VIN. LOF glass codes is a good tip for the production date , otherwise if i don't have the production sheets , i use also engines ,DANA20 or axles numbers
The small window cab was indeed discontinued in 1966.
