On the 455, I put a '79 Caddy 425 into my '75 J-20 and put 454 TBI on that. Just wish I could find an OD to bolt to it. :ymalien:

Th400 right now.
I am seriously thinking about finding another case to cut the bell off of like Ristow did and grafting it onto a 700r4 I have in the back yard.
The flywheel for the Caddy is $500 new, and I dont see them come up on fleabay. At this point, I dont have funds for it, so I am driving it like I stole it. 8-}

I still think it would be easier to build an adapter rather than try to weld on the transmisson case

You can buy new flexplates for the 425 still. Even the dealer doesn't charge $500 for them!

No, I mean "flywheel". To do a manual trans behind the caddy. This is why I'm doing the auto stuff. Sorry, I guess I should have been more clear.

I have access to a TIG welder at work for welding the aluminum together, but I dont have access to a Mill for cutting out an adapter. I'm trying to be resourceful with what I've got. I am open to suggestions, but I have no cash... ~x(

MTS makes them? IIRC, they were the same as Buick 401 but the memory is a bit rusty.

WOW, I hadnt looked at them in a while. $395. Thats easier to handle, and I think I saw someone say the crank had to be modified. This "free" engine is getting pricey fast... :-o

My first vehicle and jeep was a 1976 wagoneer I bought in college. I grew up with a 1973 j4000 and a 1977 wagoneer. I recently acquired my dad's j4000. It is still in great shape and will be in better shape soon.

My first 4x4 was also my first car .... a 1970 Toyota Land Cruiser with a Ford 302 under the hood and a set of 10 inch tires ...... but my favorite is my 1979 Waggie that I currently own. (Now if I can just get it running and on the road ... )

I don't miss mine, high reving slow moving rough riding bucket of bolts :D kinda miss it some days.
It was a Willys Pickup with an AMC-343 V8 setup for towing, pulling, and hauling. Rode like a lumber wagon or a brick.

On second thought I'm glade its gone, Any long trips involved red urine.

1974 VW beetle, 33" swampers, hopped up engine. You couldn't get it stuck. It was only 2WD but I would do donuts around the 4x4s when they'd get stuck. Man I loved that car.

I think it keeps with the spirit of the topic. Being the first vehicle you took offroad, or what have you. Lifted bugs with big tires wheel pretty well ;)

No worries, I later got a 97' wrangler, then an 05 Wrangler, and now I have an 85 Waggie and 66 M35A2 which I've bobbed. But I still stick by the fact that my bug could out do many 4x4s.

So I finally found this photo :)

My first 4x4 was my '75 Cherokee. This is the day after I bought it. Wasted no time taking it out fishing to a local lake via a fun little trail :)

Well since it was already introduced...
Image
In the early early 80s I had a 74 bug slammed to the ground. After many many fixit tickets I decided it needed to fly! Scan from a photograph. This was in Johnson Valley about 15 miles from the hammers rock pile area. Those are Armstrong Norseman tires. My daily driver at this time was an 85 GMC full size Jimmy with the 6.2 diesel, 700r4, np208, blah blah blah... It was kind of a pile, got good freeway mileage with 33's. Was a dog if there was any kind of incline.
I took and passed my drivers test in a 77 Cherokee Chief!
Back to the baja bug... It would not get stuck out there. I modified the e-brake into a turning brake and when one wheel started to spin I would just lock it up with the turning brake and the other would grab and toss me out of there. 1835 with ported heads, large valves, dual 44's. blah blah.... It moved!
Now I'm sad I let it go  Maybe it's okay, I'm still alive. Had an indecent at about 90mph. Two flats on the drivers side on a long lonely stretch of desert road. #:-s
Man it was a kick!! :-bd
