I bought this truck without seeing or knowing much about it. I don’t have regrets but I’m not as happy with it as I hoped.
I has what from a distance looks like selectable hubs with six cap screws attaching the selector knob housing/cap however there is no selector knob. There is simply a round cover of sorts that says 4x4.
This truck has a NP208 T Case which is part time. So what is this object on the end of my hub?
I used to name my FSJ’s after their previous owners, I realized I had too many with five named Rick.
My guess offhand is that they may be a selectro style hub, or they could be drive slugs with the OEM cover from an NP203 equipped GM truck. The full time trucks had a cover that said 4x4 on it in a stylized orange text.
They are auto locking hubs, the big 3 used them in the 80's, Ford until 96. if they work they are fine if they don't replace them with a manual set or try soaking them in ATF for a couple of days and put them back on and see if that helps. Those trucks use a syncro in the tcase to allow shift on the fly. The rotation of the axle shaft locks the hub, they crack, pop and make all kinds of racket but do work if they aren't overly greased or corroded.

The bus I ride is so short it is a yellow Smart Car full of squirrels, monkeys and clowns.
