Got a crash on the dashcam today.

Post by dodgerammit »

If you run one, you get to back up all of those weird and wacky tales of driving adventures with proof.

My personal favorite is one of a horse running down the highway. Still have that one saved on the PC.

So, today, I was sitting at a traffic light when the guy in the lane next to me mistook the car ahead inching forward was the light turning green. The turn light had activated, but not the main green.

Pretty good hit and shove from the truck. I think the driver panicked and hit the gas instead of the brake.
Didn't look like much was done other than a scuffed bumper.
I pulled over and gave the guy rear-ended my contact info should he need it. He didn't seem too worried about the scuff.

Chances are the crash bar under the plastic bumper was pretty mangled. Those bumpers do a good job of hiding damage.

I have caught quite a few things on my dash cam. From road rage drivers, to a local dealership taking my Wrangler for a joy ride when all they were supposed to do was trouble shoot an engine code (I wont ever go back there, thats for sure).

Action happens about 1:40 in the vid.

I have a dash cam and have about 50 vids of various mess ups. No actual accidents. This one was pretty darn close:

I have the one when I got rear ended at nearly 60 mph. I had nearly stopped for a traffic accident and was pulling off the road when slammed by a crew cab 3/4 ton Dodge. Totalled my 1st T/A. He was looking at the car from the first accident off in the field. Came in handy as later, the story of both wrecks was spun against me and the other non fault driver claiming all sorts of other excuses.
The other at fault was a teenage girl that pulled in front of the other guy. At first her mom tried to claim me and that guy were drag racing and speeding, which the video clearly showed wasn't the case as I was a full minute behind the 1st wreck. Then she tried claiming the guy was driving blacked out (at midnight, in the rain no less). I gave him a copy of the clip. Perfectly straight and flat road. You could see his taillights ahead of me along with the time of impact him hitting his brakes and as his truck spun, his headlights went out. She had already had 2 or 3 wrecks, all her fault, and was at risk of losing her license or insurance.
The guy that hit me tried claiming my taillights weren't functioning or dim. Immediately after the wreck, I took a picture of the remaining, functioning taillight since my car was still idling. Bright as can be. The bulb of the damaged one also showed the fully illuminated at impact tell-tale blackening inside. He had already had something like 6-7 wreck in the last year, all his fault.

Also have a clip from my wife's car where a C5 convertible pulled across a divided highway without stopping in the median. A Nissan Hardbody slammed that car, pinning it against a brick wall/light pole. He tried to avoid, but just had no reaction time because the divided median had a rounded crown, hiding the Vette. My wife was about 700 ft back from the truck. I pulled it and turned it in to the local law enforcement. I'll never post it anywhere. The woman driving the car later died from injuries. She was full-time taking care of her husband who had cancer. Probably was tired or had something on her mind and didn't pay attention.

Wow. People suck. Just fess up that you made a mistake and move on.
I feel 'naked' without my dash cam. Sometimes I forget the memory card in the computer and roll without it. So far it hasn't made a difference.

I got rear ended once in my Jeep and it slammed me into the car in front of me. There was talk about if I was really stopped or did I hit the car in front of me and then I got hit. I would have loved to have my dashcam at the time. Fortunately the pics of the car under my jeep were good enough to show that I had stopped in time.

I watch a lot of dashcam 'cammer' videos and many many times they say that the video proof saved them. People just flat out lie about what happened.

I always stop and act as a witness when I witness an accident. I will certainly always provide video if I have it.

Stay safe out there!

Yep. Some people suck.

And yeah, I feel naked without mine as well. My last one was a Cobra CDR 840. It lasted 2 years, and while it still functions, the port for the power cord is sketchy, along with the sd card sometimes 'disconnecting' from the device, so it is retired.

I went for about 9 months without one. The thought of everything that I missed that is comical along with the close calls I've had bothered me.

I now run an Asako Trace 1. It has front and rear facing recording, with the rear being B/W. It is designed to record the driver in case of negligence on their part. I find it also records decently out the rear window, so I don't have to worry about dual cameras, which is what I was wanting to go to anyway.

Just the other day, I passed a vehicle that had "CHAMPION DRIVING SCHOOL 'student driver' " on it. Usually, these are always good for some irony. As I passed, I glanced over. One dog, hanging out the front passenger window. Another dog, sitting in the back seat. The driver, whether they were student or passenger was to be determined, had their phone up in front of them, texting......

The reason we have dash cams on our vehicles is because a guy ran a red light, hit my wife, admitted it on scene, and then changed his story so it became "equal fault". Meaning he said my wife ran the red light. So now we have cameras so that wont happen again.

Mine came after an unjustified traffic stop. I won't go into details, but the Officer flat out had no reason to pull me over. Tried to claim my brake lights or taillights weren't functioning. They were. Took pictures immediately following the stop. Filed a complaint.
They pulled his dashcam video and it confirmed my suspicions. Nothing to give reason to stop me, much less the reason he stated.

I was pulled over once for literally no reason. It was early in the morning. I got up early to hike before the heat. It was still dark out. The police officer was a total jerk. It was another LEO who explained to me, while I am sitting down on the ground, that something had happened in the area. I wasn't told specifically why I was pulled over. I didn't think to ask. I would have liked to have it on dash cam.

Wow.

Now, granted, I personally have nothing against LEOs at all. I have several friends in law enforcement, being highway patrol, local police, or sheriff dept. Many of them are friends because of appreciation of vintage vehicles or through the martial arts I took.

I have been pulled over 4 times in 22 years. Only in that one was the reason total BS. The very first one was for the same reason. Turns out a fuse had blown. Being, young and dumb, I didn't realize it. The officer stayed behind me and escorted me to the parts store so I could fix it. No ticket. No warning. Just protect and serve.

I have LEO friends. I respect the police, the difficulty of the job and the dangers they face. I have been pulled over for valid reasons and each of these was a 'good' experience. It would be nice if they could get rid of all of the 'bad apples'. They do get rid of some of them, but not all. After all, we are all human.

dashcam ... choices

Post by letank »

any good recommendation beside the 2 listed in the discussion, Akaso Trace 1 has the parking monitoring ... after a couple of hit and run it is getting to be an annoyance... and hopefully the tweakers will not try to break in to grab the dashcam...

Yes. Here is how it works. First off, there are sensitivity levels. Any "bumps" are locked as a separate file.

It records front/back views and stores them in different folders. Front and rear. They are stored in folders labeled 'lock', 'movie', and 'parking'.
Movie records the drive.
Lock is if you have locked the files or possibly the g sensor in a crash will lock the files.
Parking files are all locked.
Mine will start recording with the door being closed if main power is disconnected. (engine off in modern cars, 12v unplugged in mine)

The recording starts about 3 seconds after the bump due to the power up process.

Whatever you get michel set the file size to the lowest record time. It will save a lot of 'searching' through videos to find the point that you wanted to capture. For example, if you can have it roll files every 2 minutes vs every 15 minutes, it's much easier to find the point why you saved the file in the shorter 2 min video.

Agreed. Mine is 3 minutes. I think max on the Asako is 5? Max on the Cobra was 10. I used 3 primarily except when I wanted to use it more as an action camera on the Tail of the Dragon. Then, I set it to 10.

I should have mentioned that most of them will allow you to set the time. Also, there are lots of 'dashcam' videos on youtube of various crashes and close calls. Many times they will list the equipment being used.

I use a Rexing V1 3rd Gen in our vehicles. Been very happy with it. Rexing also has systems with front and rear cameras.
