Just bought a 83 J10 with an AMC 20 rear axle. Should only one rear tire spin in the Dirt? That sucks.

Why is this such a hard answer to find? I've searched quite a bit for the answer and can't find much about this rear axle. My 2000 TJ spins both rear tires, I would have thought this truck would. I can't even climb a slight hill in 2 wheel drive. Only the passenger side spins. Also, I've never seen a radiator without a fan shroud? Is it missing or was it designed that way?

You haven't searched that hard or you'd see that there are different types of differentials for most axles. You clearly have a traction aid in the D35 in your TJ and an open diff in the M20 in your J10. FYI, the M20 was the only axle used in the military HUMVEE, so it's not a "that sucks" axle. The only reason a Dana 44 is considered better is that the Dana has more aftermarket support. Pound for pound the M20 is just as strong if not stronger.

Hey,
Thanks for the reply redone.
Make no mistake, I like JEEPS. I've invested quite a bit of money in them. There's 5 sitting in my yard. I've always wanted a J10 since I was a kid and finally got one last week. The fact that only one rear tire spins still sucks, but my J10 is awesome.

Is there anything I can do to the differential to change this? Thanks for the fan shroud link. Did this truck come from factory with a fan shroud?

Sure, you can get in there with a welder and weld the gears in the differential together. Or rebuild it if it's got a limited slip.

To be certain you will need to remove the cover.

Yes, it came with a fan shroud from the factory.

I purchased some Champion RN 14 YC plugs for the 360, then I thought about the HEI distributor the PO put on.. Will the plugs still be appropriate?

They should be okay. You can go with a slightly larger gap since the HEI puts out more 'spark'.

LSD (TracLock in this case) was a popular option, but not always present. My J20 is open at both ends. If you have a full-time case, LSD was not usually available.

There are plenty of options for the axle but once you look into adding a Traction Device then you have to consider new gears for larger tires. I installed an Aussie lunch box locker in the front axle and if I remember correctly I didn't have to reset the gears.

Yes! I go with .050 gap on HEI plugs.
