Can anyone give me rainmans link being he may have done this particular swap (Dodge 318/a518 for a AMC 360/727). I want to get a feel of what I'm up against. I know that the 727 will not change over due to bell housing configuration. I know people who love the 360 AMC(actually Buick 350), but I want an engine that you don't have to modify internally so the 7th and8th journals get oiled, you don't have to modify so the timing chain will get oiled and where the oil pump will not grind its self into the timing chain cover. I am a MOPAR person and I want to put a MOPAR engine in the vehiclelike should have happened when MOPAR bought JEEP from AMC. Any help is appreciated. Kinda started this in another post.
The 7th and 8th journal issue is usually high rpm stuff, which the Jeep doesn't do.
My engine was fine during teardown save from a rod bearing that spun. Not a fault from oiling.
The timing chain stuff is pretty simple mod. Just widen the oil groove on rear face for cam oil hole alignment.
However, I understand wanting to stay familiar.
If your engine is functioning, go ahead and take a video of it running (and driving if possible).
Put the engine and trans up for sale for a few hundred bucks. The buyer can see the video and feel better about a buildable engine purchase.
Give me a few and I'll see if I can find the link to the threads.
FWIW, Mopar kept AMC drivetrain because the Wagoneer was a cash cow. They made bank on every one sold without having to touch it. It was due to be phased out in 91 regardless, so any mods/retooling would have been unnecessary expense.
Also, the Grand Cherokee we all see as mopar was an AMC child. Already developed and nearing production before AMC was bought out. Chrysler just put its efi system (better than Renix as far as reliability) on it. Win-Win for Mopar.
