It’s a strap for keeping rear seat in folded position. And an ashtray

Oh okay! Do you just pull and buldge it out to hold the seat or so you connect it to the seat somehow?

I've had this Cherokee for a few years now and it's always bothered me not knowing what that's for

Here's a page from owners manual (it is for GW, but should be same for Cherokee)

Your rear seat should have stud that you can put that strap over

The funny part is, when I saw the subject, I thought. "Oh, the strap". And I apologize to the OP. It was his very first post and it had a link, those can be a bit suspect.

So cool, thanks for the pictures. Pretty sure my '76 manual doesn't mention anything with the rear seat, it took my awhile to find the latch to fold it.
