York Compressor pulley offset differences

York Compressor pulley offset differences
Hello All,
I've recently overhauled and installed a Jeep junkyard York 210 compressor on my '78 Cherokee Chief 401 with all the factory brackets. I discovered a rather large pulley offset error. My internet research yielded two part #'s for replacement clutches and a discrepancy in the offsets listed in the info:
Double Groove - 47323 2.5" and 1.875"
Single Groove - 47811 2.625"
The difference seems to be between a factory and a legacy aftermarket AC install. My problem is that my offset error appears to be around 0.250" rather than the simple 0.125" difference between the two available pulleys.
Can any of you offer any insight into what and where the differences might be and additionally how to rectify them?

Most of my AC parts come from these guys, if you go to the legacy catalog two clutch's are listed for Wagoneers , personally when I installed a York on my 79 J10 (AMC360) just used a off the shelf 6" dual groove clutch.

Thanks for the link sonoraed. I looked at it and found the York section of the legacy catalog. They have 4 numbers listed between the 1 and 2 groove options. I was able to cross them to the info sections of each part on the Rock Auto website which led me back to the original 2 parts.
I'm interested in finding out if there's a shaft-length or housing offset difference or if all of the offset differences are made up in the pulley and clutch assembly?

The shaft on the York and Tecumseh compressors (R&L 210 models) are all the same.

Okay, that's good to know that the shafts are all the same. I have a feeling that the mount holes in the cases are the same as well - just a hunch. I'll compare with the J20. Thanks for all your help - I'll post the results for thread reference purposes.

I went out to the J20 and the Cherokee and removed the center bolt from the two AC compressors. As you can see the bolts are different in length:

and these images show the difference in offset and a heavy belt angle:


I reached a plastic mechanical pencil inside both setups where the bolt goes and registered it with the chamfer for the clamp bolt threads. I then took a razor and scored the pencil flush with the front of each clutch. There's a 0.280" difference between the two which is about in line of my earlier estimate of 1/4" error between the two.

Looks like the bottom compressor was maybe replaced (it has semi-nice paint) and its pulley has less offset, probably for a slightly different application?

The compressor in the lower picture is the one that I got from a junkyard and overhauled. I did take care to clean as much as possible in the solvent tank/parts washer. I never even thought to check if there was ever a difference in pulley offset. Now I know and am trying to shed light for others who run in to this.
Apparently there are two pulley offsets from back in the day. One is a factory AC install (Upper J20 with the dirtier compressor) and the other is a legacy aftermarket install. I'm assuming that there was a difference in the mounting brackets which would warrant a pulley offset change from the aftermarket to use the same York. The problem here seems to be a York on an AMC/Jeep Bracket with a pulley/clutch from the legacy aftermarket. The compressor shaft lengths appear to be the same as illustrated in the bolt lengths and the scribed marks on the pencil. If someone is going to do this, the two Four Season part #s and their corresponding offsets are listed at the start of this thread. I found them in the rock auto info section.
