Vinyl repair

Post by musicmaster » Thu Jul 06, 2017 5:33 am

Has anybody had any luck using that liquid vinyl and grain stamp to repair cracks in door panels?

I've tried numerous times. I worked in a boat yard where we had a guy that was pretty good at, but I've never been able to color match. It always ends up looking like an off-color smear of gooey snot.

Chevy style HEI (ECM controlled)
Dolphin "Shark" gauges in a fancy homemade oak bezel
3/4 resto, rotting faster than I've been fixing it.

You'd be amazed at how many shades of black there are, haha! The guy that was good at it had a CD case full of grain stamps and an attachment that hooked to the end of a heat gun he used to stamp the patch. I still say give it a try, just don't expect perfection in your first go. Who knows, you might be a savant.

Lol... I was just looking at one of those kits in Walmart. Can't be worse than the massive crack in my dash now...

Just dashes can make you a brand new dash, but not door panels

Another option that will cost less is having your existing dash 'wrapped'.
The upholsterer repairs cracks and damage then lays a new layer of vinyl over everything.

While this is a late model dash being wrapped, you can get an idea of the process.
This guy is one of the best upholsterers I've ever seen!

a bit late, I had good success with the black on the the vinyl door panel, from the kit at your auto store, it was pretty good.
On the other hand the burgundy that I created on the door panel and the armrest exposed to the sun are separating after 6 months.
