Hello!
The Sierra Nevada Full Size Jeep Club is hosting a campout near Lovelock, NV at the Ghost Town of Tunnel Camp. This area, known as the Seven Troughs district, was mined heavily from the 1870's until the 1940's. Today the town of Tunnel Camp lies abandoned with only a few structures and the foundation of the massive mill remaining. There is a large flat area to camp out right next to town overlooking the whole valley. There are some mine shafts nearby to check out as well as the remains of the town itself. Just a couple miles away is the abandoned town site of Vernon, once a town of 4,000 people. Scattered throughout the area are the remains of stamp mills, processing plants, mine heads, and villages. Come out for a fun weekend in the middle of Nevada exploring eerie ghost towns and telling tall tales. Who knows, maybe one of the locals will say hello!
Tunnel Camp is about 30 minutes north of Lovelock on graded dirt roads. Set up Camp Friday afternoon and explore the surrounding town and ruins, as well as enjoy the stark, empty wilderness Friday night. Saturday will be a circle trail route of about 2-3 hours past the town sites of Vernan and 7 Troughs as well as the remains of the Cyanide mill and several mines. Trail is easy/moderate mostly loose with a couple steep descents. Stock FSJs should be fine though 31s might be a more comfortable and scrape-free time. Can go out and explore the valley as well. Saturday night campfire tales and games. Sunday pack up and head for home. Monday August 12th is the first day of school for a lot of Northern NV, so this could be a great end of summer adventure for the kids!
