WTB: Dana 60-2 from 68-73 J4000 or J4600

Post by gubni » Mon Aug 31, 2020 11:34 am

I own lugnut4x4 and we make disc brake kits for all Dana 60 rears except the 5 lug from the J4000. The reason why is because I don't have one to make a kit for it. I have been told these axles were used 68-73 in J4000 and J4600 trucks. I will pay for the axle or trade a disc brake kit although I will say it takes months to make a new kit. We are located in northeast TN. I need a complete axle assembly.

I own your kit for an 80’s Dodge rear 60 axle and must say it’s a very nice package.
I will check with our AZ folks and see if they have one.

I'm parting a 72 in Boise, ID with a 60-2. I plan to keep the brake drums (to replace a craptastic ElDorado based disk conversion) but the rest is up for grabs if you can figure out how to get it from my driveway to your shop.

I think it would cost more than it's worth to ship, but if you are interested in fixing your ebrake I sell those and they work amazing well. There is probably something wrong and I would be glad to help you figure it out. Just email me Shawn at Lugnut4x4.com

I bought the 60 -2 in Nevada. I have spare axles and have 2 more drums now . Should be another 4:10 powerlok in it too . Thanks on the offer for the 60 -2 Herk. The drums are the most important part . The disc conversion if using the metric Eldorado calipers are a waste . Those are too little as are the brake pads. Those are GM intermediate size car pads that are used and are not at all up to the job especially if they are organic pads. Using the 76 Eldorado calipers are Full size like the front Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 and all the j10 and Wagoneers. So using those gives you full size parts . In addition , the bleeding of the calipers requires the proper position to get the air out . This is NOT the position they normally get mounted on a conversion . You will not get the air out and have a spongy or low pedal . Something most 4x4 kit sellers never tell you .

I believe Herk meant his Dana 60 -2 for lug nut 4x4 wanting a 60 -2 ,not for me whoops. , but the other information on brake caliper issues is still relevant for anyone read g this post.

I have a 5 lug rear axle from a 1973 J4000 but I thought it is a 44. I didn't give much attention to it perhaps it is a 60.

You can have it for free but I cannot ship. Would you like me to investigate?

Yes, please check it out. I can pay shipping and arrange for a local truck terminal that you can drop it off at. Thank you very much.

WTB: Dana 60-2 from 68-73 J4000 or J4600

Post by 66stepside » Thu Jan 07, 2021 9:05 am

If someone has a a set of "parking brake bars" for the 5 lug Dana 60-2, I am looking for a set.

Gubni, if you're building the disc brake conversion kit for this axle (which is a great idea), perhaps fabricating this parking brake bar might also be a good idea as they are not east to find. On the other hand, if you get the axle and don't need these bars, let me know and I'll buy them.

I believe that the dodge muscle cars of the mid 60'2, early 70's also used this axle, too.

Sorry for the hijack!

It would be easy to make. Do you have one that you could send me to copy? If not I can copy one from the axle when I get it.

I have one in 54 Willy’s, but I don’t have a spare laying around. When you get it one made up is fine. I plan on making a set when I have the time to take mine apart, but I don’t plan on selling them.

The part number # for the park brake crossbar is BENDIX 302143 . I may have a right and left , I can dig around . With 12 inch brakes there are other 12 inch brake setups on old Dodge FORD and GM that will have the right length bar , these would be rear brakes only . Drums and shoes may not be the same but that bar should be correct length for 12 inch brakes . If you wanted to fab up a couple , buy cold rolled steel as it is harder than Hot rolled . Less prone to bending , and these do bend sometimes . Check with Mark or Neil at J&W Jeep .He won't have drums for sure but shoukd have back I g plates with the bars on them possibly. People want drums not the whole plate .I'm not quite sure about selling mine yet , but I'll see about it . I need to I look at the ones on my truck to see if they are good . From time to time a brake shoe fail or a spring breakage inside drum wreaks havoc and the bars get bent up .

Thank you for the tips and the heads up- if you decide to sell, let me know. Or if you can just trace out a template for each unit, that would be great, too!
