I posted what we were attempting to do already. With the exception of Tom's response that he could provide storage, no one has made any other comments.

I do know that at least on author is deceased, Joe Sego. I can get in touch with Mike Baxter, and John Meister, but the others I'm not so sure about. I haven't talked to Jeff Watts in several years, and it's pretty much the same with the others. I might be able to get in touch with the New Zealand/Australia crowd, but I'm not sure at all.

Lindel,
I started with the most common contributer, Joe Schaefer.
I started with Joe simply because there are so many documents by him.
I have received permission from him directly that his contributions can be archived, cleaned up and reformatted as needed.
His permission states that they can be archived here and (I'll pm that info to you), whatever is in the best interest of preservation.

With that in mind I started experimenting with retaining some of the original html code but making them more generic in appearance. That was quite tedious. My feeling is that this will probably be faster to turn them into PDF files and lock them to prevent alteration.

Just so I understand, it sounds like we can't save the IFSJA forum posts but we can save the tech library? Hopefully the pdf's will be searchable if you go that route.

Is there really no way to have someone take a snapshot of the server its on now and move it somewhere else? There is so much great information in the forum posts it would be a hug shame to lose it. Whats the full story here. Who owns and maintains the server the site sits on now? Just curious.

I don't know how to do that Scott.
I'm barely tech savy enough to recover my own web site that went down.
I'll be happy to try, but I need some directions.

Hah, I didn't even notice there was a second page to this post. So my above comment was actually intended for an earlier one.

Anyway....

If we post them here, the CMS (content management system) likes to use text, that is then formatted in what is basically a word processor that is built into it.

Now we can post them as PDF's, it just wont look quite as nice. Although really there is no real way to lock down a PDF. You can make it hard to modify them, but there is nothing preventing somebody from just doing a copy and paste and creating a new one. But so is the way of the web.

So if we want to post them here (here being the main site) don't bother formatting the HTML or anything like that. All we need is the raw displayed text. Reformatting and such can be done in either a standard word processor (Word, Pages, etc) and then pasted into the CMS, or simply edited in whole in the CMS itself. Either way is fine. The CMS is designed so that adding content is extremely easy, and there is little to no programming/scripting knowledge required.

I understand Tad. 10 years ago I managed multiple websites, forums and several game servers but I have forgotten most of it. Let me do this, since I work with a company of ultra geeks and we host many forums and web pages, I will see if I can recruit someone who may be able to help.

Do you know if the physical server its hosted on is a Windows server or a Linux server? Do you have a log in to the server itself or just access through the forum software?

Ok, from what I can tell the server is linux based and I can FTP to it anonymously. If we can get the username and password to the server account that the site is hosted under we could FTP all the files to another server. Pretty basic actually, its just a matter of logging into the server. It looks like the site is hosted with either a company called Golden Computer Service in Golden, Colorado or White Wolf Hosting in Texas. Cant tell for sure.

I have a question, who is paying for the site to stay up? They would be able to get the log in information.

A WHOis search of the domain name says its registered to someone name Jerald Jones. Do we know who this is?

Another thing I found is a tool that will convert vBulletin 2.x to phpBB. Looks like ifsja is vBulletin 3.x but its a start.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbb/f ... tin%202.x/

Here is a thread about vBulletin 3.x to phpBB. I really think a full conversion of the forum is possible, we just need access to the files.

Well first, we can't directly copy the whole IFSJA site off the server. Even if we had the password. That would be theft. That can only be done with explicit consent from the site owner. And if we had that, we would not be in the position that we are in now.

But if we were given the site, there would be no need to convert it. We would just upgrade it to VB4 and be done with it.

I appreciate you wanting to help though :)

I only have access to the Admin CP, which is limited, no server access at all.
This might answer your question.

Scott, a big part of the problem that we have is the actual owner of the board, Adam (Dome) Zymet (sp?). He has refused to sell or surrender rights to the board, but at the same time is a non-participant, to the point that he probably won't notice when the board goes down until he looks at his email.

JC (Jerald) Jones owns the server the board lives on, is a member of IFSJA, and donates server space and bandwidth free of charge. That's why you don't see adds like other boards.

The lack of updates is what's killing us, and the lack of support from Dome. That's why we want to preserve the tech data before it all goes away. It'd be a shame to lose what in some cases is data that 15 years old.

Tad, Mike has been emailed and John has been contacted via facebook (I lost his email when my yahoo account exploded).

I'll see if I can get in touch with some of the guys down under today.

Ok, now I see the whole picture. Well can't do much about someone not wanting give up the access and rights to the site. Seems a little selfish to me but I am sure he has his reasons.

Whatever...

Whatever the excuse...

Whatever the excuse is, there is no reason that is good enough.

LOL, thanks for the moment of levity.

Anywho, I have the tcase section of the tech library ready to go in pretty clean .doc files.
I'll shoot them off to Brandon when he is ready.

I figure the more these get spread around the easier it will be to gather them up later if needed.
With that in mind I also put them on my site in .pdf format.

EDIT:
Above link has been edited to reflect where the D300/NP208 file came from and also provide a link to JJ for more detailed QuadraTrac information.

That PDF was from the Jubilee Jeeps site.

I think yours is what I replaced the original I had with.
I found the original CD Chet (mtngoat) Carter gave me this morning when I was digging out old hard drives I have saved.
Pretty sure he actually paid $$ for his copy on Sleezebay.
I have no clue why I save some of this crap
