Danskin Lookout Attempt #1 and #2

Post by ghcoe »

Video from our 2014 first attempt to reach the lookout on Danskin Mountain. Putting together old video that normally just sits on my HD. Why let it waste away? Now others who enjoy this type of thing can join in and enjoy the fun. See you on the trails, George.

Quite the erosion on the road. Why didn't you make it to the top?

The tan Jeep pickup began to have fuel delivery issues. We think sediment began to be stirred up in the tank due to the rough road. The fuel pump was full of black stuff. Luckily he had a old pump with him. By time we changed out the pump it was beginning to get late. About 5 miles down the road the old pump became clogged too! This is when we really put two and two together about where the sediment came from. We started to try and clean out the pump that we just took out, while he removed the pump he just put in. Luckily one of us had a inline filter and we put it in before the pump. This got us most of the way back with occasional stops to clean out the filter, but eventually the pump gave out all together. I think particles got lodged into the valves and it just gave up. Finally about 5 miles from town we resorted to driving in and getting a new pump and some more inline filters to change out. He had another 30 miles to go to get home, but he made it with the new pump and filters ok.

Ahh, thats some road kill level stuff :)

Stop every 5 miles to fix what you just fixed before you then have to fix it again.

Yup, had the same thing happen to me one time. I had taken the tank out and cleaned it when I got the Jeep back on the road. I had just lead a group through a trail. We said our good-byes about 15 miles from the nearest town. I though I would go and check out a nearby dam before heading home. I made it down into the canyon, but coming out I barely made it. I had thought to put a filter before the pump when I cleaned the tank and it looked fine. Suspected the pump. Once I got on level ground it seemed OK for a few miles and then it slowly began to loose power. By time I got home I could barley do 15 mph.

Changed out the pump the next day, still had the same problem. Looked at the filter again and it still looked fine. I went ahead and took it off and pounded it on the ground a few times and sure enough some really fine clear like sediment fell out of the media. Replaced the filter and ran fine after that. I did have to replace the filter a few months later, had the same problem. They might run fine on the smooth stuff, but once the gas starts really sloshing around it can break up that sediment and send it down the line.
