Does it really count as a Cherokee if it has four doors?

I'd like to get one just to offend the do gooders who would be offended on behalf of Cherokee people who they believe must not be smart enough to be offended by a vehicle with that name on their own.

Hahaha, I honestly don’t know if it counts, or not!

I thought it was a bit weird to have it a four door, but what makes a Cherokee not a Wagoneer... just the taillights, and Cherokee stamped on the license plate holder!? Haha.

I'm no authority but I thought they were a lower trim/option level than the Wags.

Yep, pretty sure they were “entry level” Jeeps to expand the market with price points “up to 1200 lower than their Wagoneer counterparts” according to expert Jim Allen.

However, the “speciality trim packages/options made the Cherokee comparable to Wagoneers- even going the distance in pricing similar, if not more than the “Custom” Wagoneers of the day”.

Mine is a base model with the bare bones options- no frills. Meaning mine would’ve been priced 1200 lower than it’s Wagoneer counterpart, lol.

I’ve had them all, just never a cherokee NT, so the base model now a days doesn’t mean much to me. I sold off my yellow Cherokee Chief WT last Winter.

The four door Cherokee was put on the market as folks wanted a 4 door base model option, while I don’t know about production numbers, I imagine the production numbers are different for each version of the Cherokee? At any rate, Jim’s book goes into some depth about collectibility, trim options, etc. Check it out if you get the chance.

With that spare in the rear cargo area, is it sporting an extra fuel tank in the factory spare location?

No such luck- it has the classic V receiver hitch mounted to the frame, so that’s why the spare is in the cargo area.

Thank you sir.
I’m not sure if you still need pics of the doors, but I came across this one on my old phone:

I’ll keep digging for more pics.

You’re very welcome! It’s the same striker plate as the other door plates, so it should be easy to source.

Meanwhile, I came out to the Cherokee to move her and it was the dreaded “no start, no crank, no lights, no nothing” syndrome.

After a search of da net, I found the ever present ammeter by-pass as a possible culprit, so I did the simple version (two wires to one clean post) and nothing happened. Same problem.

I ran all the standard checks with the meter and couldn’t figure out any power source coming from the battery- it seemed to stop at the starter solenoid. So I replaced that and had lights at least, but no crank, then I swapped out the starter and BAM she’s back to running. Whew. I ordered a new ammeter gage and will install that when it arrives.

I literally just finished. The windshield is toast.
It’s sunny and 28 right now - and breezy. I’m dodging ice chunks falling from he neighbor’s trees.

It’s cracked in four different areas- I don’t think it’s legal to have a windshield this broken on the road.

That stinks. Bummer that tree decided to drop branches due to the storm. Thankfully it wasn't worse, hopefully you get a quick replacement windshield from safelite.

That is a bummer, but not sure what to make of the Satelite comment. I always heard that they are kind of the Maaco of glass installers - locations everywhere, but typically staffed by inexperienced goofs who don't have the experience to work on specialized stuff and aren't paid enough to care. Looking around the forums seems to validate that impression.

Thank you; it’s a pisser for sure.

The Custom, fully loaded white 78 Waggie is my son’s project. He’s studying to be a mechanical engineer and wants to work in the automotive industry in some capacity.

We’re going to try and source a “new” windshield from the wrecking yard. We have some time before this beast is road worthy.

If not from a local yard, then I have one spare windshield that has a minor crack that Is ok to run on the road if needed until I can source an inexpensive one.

DarkMonohue, I can't speak to their quality or folks, I seemed to recall folks said they were able to get new glass pretty quickly through them, that was the only reason I mentioned them.

66stepside, fingers crossed that you'll find a good replacement(s) up there, seems to be more donors in the yards there than in San Diego...don't often see them here. Good luck, and cool that your son is working on an FSJ project too!

Thanks Chubbinius.

I’ve used a few different glass places over the years for my herd of jeeps, but most now days don’t touch anything older than 1990.

We had a tough time finding someone to get glass in my son’s truck when we did the frame off on that. One company came out, then walked away in the middle of the install. Now I just do my own.

I took some minor dents out, reinforced the bench seat on the drover’s side, insulated the floor (po has new floor pans installed and then applied por 15 on them), then put on some carpet.

Also some floor mats to match- I have to get new mats for the Willy’s now. Image

66stepside, where can I get a pair of floor mats like these? I have ugly black rubber ones that don’t fit that well now and kinda want to keep rubber. These look lovely and look like they fit well
