Did a thing today!
Image

Took the front off, they did not save on bolts! Nothing broke Imagehad to spray a lot, brush the threads of the bolts, and loosen end tighten the bolts several times before they came out.

Image
The result is cool, fairly Ok state of frame, just surface rust, nothing that needs welding!

Image
The two holes for the core support are no longer round, I assume they once were. Must have been rattling and flexing over the years but hey, Jeeps need Flex!

Next week we’ll take the driveline out! Time to start reserving a bay in the body shop soon!

Couple more updates.
Image
Got the engine out, sold and gone!

Then started getting the body mounts loose.
What a pain! I guarantee, new swear words have been invented over this job, half of the bolts broke, so had to drill access holes from above
Image

The bolts that did not break, welded the nut to the nut retainer ( super flimsy piece of sheet metal) and was able to get 4 bolts out neatly.
The broken ones: just ripped the retainer cages out and the bolts and nut got out towards the top.

This is by far the most irritating task so far. But hey, the body is loose. Next week we’ll put it on a cart and the body will be off to the body shop for tons of work in straightening, rust proofing and finally a nice coat of midnight blue! But that will take a couple of weeks and roughly 100 more hours..

Created a dolly cart to put the body on today

Image
Took off the doors and rear hatch

Image
And lifted the body off without issues, off to the body shop

Image
So the next couple of weeks it’s frame time!

What color are you going with?

And yes, body mounts can be such a pain!

since this stuff got real serious (for me at least, I started with a car, now I have tons of parts labelled in boxes allover the garage, the body in the bodyshop, the engine on order, and a chassis to clean up :) I decided to give this a now permanent boring serious title:
wim's '84 blue hemi swap.
that's it guys, stuff gets real from here as I have almost nothing left to unbolt. just restore, replace and rebuilt from here.
hooray!

  • body is at the bodyshop, the bodyshop will need 6 to 8 weeks since they are very busy.
  • Ordered new brake and axle parts, new rubber bushings all around, currently fixing 2 rusted bodymounts and cleaning the frame.
  • In 2 weeks I can start the buildup of the frame once all the parts are in.
  • the engine is a '19 challenger with a 8hp70 gearbox and is currently being prepped (standalone wiring harness, ECU and TCU reprogramming), shipping expected in about 6 to 8 weeks
So just a bunch of boring chassis work basically, I am taking the small parts like spring shackles, fueltank skidplate mounting brackets from the chassis to the sandblaster tomorrow and they will be powdercoated black.

hope to be able to show some interesting pictures of stuff going back on to the chassis soon.

Update:
Last bit of work on the chassis:
2 body mount points on the right side were rotted out.
Quite the luck that one block away there is a workshop building truck chassis and trailers. They had some 5 mm steel plate leftovers so I could make them fit and weld them in.

Turned out pretty good!

Chassis is being blasted this week and will paint with rust preventive primer and 2k epoxy next week!

Had to wait 6 weeks for the frame to be blasted so decided to just wire wheel it and paint with etching primer and Brantho Korrax, stuff is used on boats to prevent rust, so this should work as well,
Smaller stuff ha been sandblasted and powdercoated, so I actually put something back on today!
The tank skidplate rubber protection mat and the tank are back in!

New bolts, fresh clean parts, love it!

Just when this was in I got some pictures from the wheel restoration guy:

Straightened, blasted, & powdercoated gunmetal, they will be cnc-ed later this week and then Clearcoated to look stock.

Love it, done with taking apart rusty nasty stuff. On to putting back on clean parts!

What needs machining on the wheels?

To make them look stock again the raised parts are machined back to bare aluminum, so it’s shiny, then cleArcoated to remain shiny Image

Guess I forgot about them being like since those look so good.

No fear that the machining will peel the coating on the edges?

After machining it will be clear coated, but he's doing modern wheels like that all the time, his shop is full of Porsche and Audi wheels which are all machined to gloss finish.
I asked him the same, but he said it almost never happens, and when it does, it's his risk and it will be done allover.

(it's also not cheap by the way. 4 wheels cost me over €800,- which is almost 1000 $

Holiday is over, time to get back at it! Went by the body shop and was glad to see that my Jeep is up for the sanding bay, they had some parts cleaned, blasted and in epoxyprimer. The main body is being sanded by hand to avoid warping any panels.

These guys are meticulous and I like that. One thing went wrong: they could not find my door hinge bolts anymore.
Can happen and they were upfront about it.

Does anyone know the specs of them? Need to order a full set of these bolts
