Brief Introduction and Father-sons build 1980 J20

Post by MsiegPT »

First post on site, but a long time reader. I remember going by a pasture 4-5 miles from where I grew up and it had 2 jeep trucks sitting there by a pond. I watched those 2 trucks sit there thru high school and college and they never moved. I finally asked if they were for sale and was told no. Grass and brush finally took them over the then the property was sold. They have long since been hauled off for scrap now.
Fast forward a bunch of years and here we are. I was originally looking for a Cherokee to turn into a daily driver, but after by oldest son (19) got involved the search was widen to include J trucks. My 2 sons have conspired against me and I think the plan now is for the youngest to by the jeep xj from the oldest and he is wanting the J20

The plan is to make this a daily driver/mild off road truck for camping, fishing, etc.
I would appreciate any feed back or suggestions as we move forward.
So far the plan is to do an LS swap and I have one sourced from a friend that is upgrading his truck to a 6.0 and 480LE so I can get the 5.3 and 465LE at good price.
We have been debating 4 inch lift springs vs rear shackle flip and 6 inch lift springs in the front.
The dash pad is in not great shape so the current plan it to just take the foam off and run with a metal dash.
We are also considering moving the wiper and dimmer switch controls to the steering column. Does anyone know if a late 80's or early 90s steering column is a direct fit?

howdy and welcome from Phoenix.

It looks pretty solid!

If you are only going to do mile wheeling you can get away with 4" lift. 35" tires should easily fit.

Thanks. From a body perspective its in really good shape. Minor spot on the rear of the bed to fix rust and it will need floor patched. Otherwise its pretty straight. I'm the second owner and it spent all its live in Southwest Oklahoma on a ranch.
The only reason I have considered going with the shackle flip and 6 inch lift is wanting to keep the J20 carrying capacity and I haven't been able to find lift springs for a J20, just J10's.

Just a thought...Mine is a J20 with J10 2" lift springs......I added Air Bags to the rear.
This gives a softer ride and in the event of a heavy load...I add air.
