I agree - very cool!
Thanks! I’m scouring the Internet for a drivetrain to swap in, the engine is toast.

May be a 6.5L Detroit for the M715? It keeps the Military theme and would get slightly better fuel economy.

1960 FC170 and a 68 M715?

Post by 66stepside » Sun Sep 08, 2019 5:30 pm

The grey canvas door panels came out pretty nice.

I mocked them up. I still need to figure out what I’ll do with the door and window handles, though.

I also need to stitch up a cover for the center console, too. That’s next up, soon I hope; along with the same material to recover the seats.

Edit:

The rain stopped soon enough so the brick could dry out:

Cut off the column ignition switch and auto tranny shifter, fiberglassed the innards, layed down a coat of filler to smooth it out two, or three days ago, then sanded her this afternoon, then applied another thin coat of filler to get the imperfections.

Image

More sanding to come

I picked up a transmission and t case combo (th400/d20) for the FC170, and a set of 70’s era caps made it into the Jeep as part of the deal. I’ll be running 6 lug axles under the FC, so these caps are a big deal to help keep it looking stocking.

I unloaded them tonight.

Here’s the source of my axles:

I’d love to tackle the inline 6- I do have a spare 258 sitting all tarped up from a 75 J10! Ugh. Decisions, decisions!

Kinda depends on whether or not Viror wants any of the parts for his Cherokee Widetrack. He’s not on the forums much anymore, but he still haunts the regional jeeps stuck in the backwoods, too.

Haha, here they do for sure. I do have some competition, though. 4 others usually buy them all to resell parts on eBay.

I buy them to keep my horde running!

1960 FC170 and a 68 M715?

Post by 66stepside » Sat Sep 21, 2019 8:32 pm

Well, today was an adventure, or maybe a misadventure. Long story short, I left the house at 9am, got back at 7pm.

BUT, it’s home.

Image

Pulled her out, put the hood in her, unbolted the seized PS box, then winched her to the dolly.

Image

It was their dolly, home built for hot rods, not Widetrack Cherokees. That was a no-go.

Since the steering box was seized up, there was no way to flat tow it (also note the mismatched wheels in front). That was another no-go. It also listed to the passenger side every few feet.

I called a lifeline, one of my jeepin buddies, and someone who also buys FSJ’s. Luckily he came to the rescue.

So I drove 1 hour home empty and met Steve. We then drove another hour back to get her.

Image

Due to the narrow, dead car lined fire break, Steve used his signature method:

Image

He used the receiver hitch on the front of his truck to finesse the trailer in forward, then backed it out. Smooth as buttered silk. Crazy impressive skills.

Dodge 1 ton dually anyone?

Image

The venerated dodge 4 speed, too!

Image

Another dodge 4 speed 4wd:

Yes it is. I thought about using the dodge 1 ton axles on the FC, but they were not the right size.

Both Dodges did have the 4 speed manual transmissions- considered to be the best, toughest 4 speed ever built. The NP435.

My Dad had a '64-'67 Dodge Power Waggon with 4speed and Slant 6 motor. He abused it for many years but only parked it after the Body Mounts had rusted out of it. In his business a truck would only last a few years [he bought old junk to begin with] but that Old PW wouldnt die.

I drove an old 68 dodge 4 door in high school with the slant 6, the car was ugly, but the engine was awesome.

So... I traded the WT Cherokee body to a guy for a J10 chassis/drivetrain plus a spare J10 motor/tranny.

I sold off some parts, then traded two engines, a front axle and a hammered Commando 1/2 cab with no glass for this beast:

I’m calling it The Pumpkin Spice J20 oz. The axles and drivetrain are going into the FC170 if all goes according to plan.
