The 205 may surprise you, since you dont have rocks. I liked the last one I drove around here (mostly mud/trails). It made the road gears in the axles behave well for trails and mud without being so low it ran out of wheel speed in the mud.
Around here the mud is so thick you need a LOT of power to spin the tires easy/fast enough in high. Then the trails are pretty easy so running in (typical) low sucks. This leaves you switching back and forth constantly, which also sucks. The 205s low (1.96) was just right to run everything and be fine. It was nice to just go.
Dont get me wrong, the 208/241 are both good cases, and quieter than the 205. (With 4.10s and aggressive tires I doubt you will notice the difference) Its just not always about lower gearing.
Besides, you already have it, and 205s are nearly indestructible.

The low first gear of the 700r4 should help with the low range of the 205. It probably wouldn't be much different than a 400/ quadratrac with low range, given the same tire and axle gears.
I used a 700r4 to jeep 208 with an AA adapter plate and tranny output. It was shorter than a gm transfer case adapter plate. Of course I only used it because I found it for a deal or I would've just used a gm input gear in a jeep case with a clocking ring.
I don't know what everyone else did but I used a B&m sport shifter for the backup/neutral switch. I did that because all of that was wired in the 727 that I removed. I'm guessing you wouldn't have that problem if you were replacing a 400.
As far as the tv cable there are plenty of aftermarket brackets for carbs. Just try to set it correctly or you will burn up your tranny fast.
i pulled the 400 and QT. bolted the AA adapter up to the block. had to do some clearancing for the passenger side manifold. bolted the 700r4 in and the dana 300 up. fits nice. the 300 is almost flat but looks like it will still clear my exhaust. front driveshaft clearance is awful at the transpan. too tight for my liking, but there are guys running this combo. i already have the pencil thin front shaft but i will have to remove the double cardan and then the shaft will be too short so ill have to see what it will cost to get it retubed. or just have a new one made. rear driveshaft looks like it might work.
i realized it after i pulled the 400, i forgot to take some dimensions. i wanted to measure where the center of the rear output should be. i have to make some kind of new transmount and now i have nothing to go by.
Hi everybody new guy here. Just joined today and was browsing the site and came across this thread and couldn't believe my luck. I too am looking at installing a 700R4 into my 69 waggy. My install hopefully will go pretty easy as I'm also installing and TBI equipped Chevy 350 with it, so I don't have any adapter or wiring issues. But I'm worried about the TV cable because I have no experience with them and heard if its out of adjustment it will ruin the tranny with just one shift. So hopefully updates will follow and I can learn along side you. As for transfer cases at I decided to go with the 208 but was worried because I always heard they were weak and prone to failure. Having no prior experience with them I did some internet searches and found many people with nothing but good things to say so I was satisfied. Until I brought it home and found out the there was no sye. I heard about the chevy/dodge hybrid and thought I would do that. but when I went to the wrecking yard couldn't find a dodge unit so I ended up grabbing a right side drop mechanical speedometer np241c out of a suburban. It has a slip yoke but I have a sye coming from jb conversions. Good luck on your swap
I don't mean to derail this thread but, I have also been curious and just took in a 700r4 and NP208 (RH) from a mid 80s Blazer. What I am wondering after studying 700 and 400 cases, do the tail shafts cross between them? They look very similar externally. Unfortunately the 208 uses a slip yoke on the rear output but could consider it a QT replacement I guess.

One of the members here (I think he is here) used one of those 241c on a T400 for a QT replacement. It is a sweet setup.
Thanks. I don't know if an output shaft from a 700 will swap into a 400 and vise versa, never looked into it. but in my searches everything i found said the splines counts are different. 700s are 27 and the 400 are 32. so if thats true transfer cases won't swap unless output shafts are swapped. something else I read said the th350, 700r4 and4L60(E) share same output shafts and the th400 and 4L80E shared the same output.
hey, as long as it has to do with a 700, its not derailing it. it would be nice to have a little more info out there for others. i had to do a lot of of research before deciding to go this route. i wasnt too succesful with the search at the time at ifsja. i pme'd one guy i think it was derf, for some info but never heard back.
id be surprised if i was getting 10 mpg with a jasper 360 holley 2 brl and the QT. im hoping to do better than that. eventually. i have one of those holley 4180s that a bunch of guys are using. i might try that.
im not sure about the tail shaft, but the housing/adapter bolt pattern is different. 6 vs 4.
so far, what ive done is the new jb input shaft in the d300, new sealed bearing and double lipped seal, new seals. i used a standard cast iron gm adapter that works for a bunch of different cases. i put the trans and tc together and installed it to see how it is all going to work. i pulled it back out for rebuild. im hoping this week to order the kits and maybe a locker to install the 4.10s. maybe in a month or so i can have it rolling again.
I have a 700R4 I had built by Mad Dog Transmissions that I will be installing in my 77 Cherokee once my 401 is built. I had Mad Dog install a 27 spline tail shaft in the 700R4 to bolt up to a D300. My D300 I ordered an adapter from AA and converted the input splines from 23 spline to 27 spline. The D300 adapts well to the 700R4. The only issue is the front ujoint clearance, however there are people using this same setup in their without worries, as long as we maintain those ujoints we shouldn't have any issue.
Monster Transmissions does a good job at building transmissions as well, Mad Dog Transmissions can get you a better deal.
The kick down kit for the over drive is available through Summit for $75.
Black Box over drives are they good for running between a 700R4 and a D300? That's what I want to know.

I'm almost done. My 3 yr old son is in the hospital so ill get back on it eventually. I had a guy I know rebuild the 700. The 300 is bolted up with a stock gm adapter and jbconversions shaft. It's clocked almost flat. I bought a kit from jbfab to weld up a twin stick kit, they didnt ave anything that would work. I used the bowtieoverdrive tv kit and lockup control. The carb bracketry is pretty nice from them. Rear driveshaft would have worked but I decided to move the rear axle back it didnt make any sense to retube, balance, and replace the ujoints. So I had 2 new shafts made.
ok i had some time to button up a few things. i took it for a few quick test drives. i still have to hook up the lock up wire. the tv made easy kit is nice to work with. i still need to do a lot of little things before i call the swap finished. brakes dont hold very well in 4lo with the 4.10s. im still using the qt offset rear axle, i didnt want to move my gas tank and i kept an eye out for a centered 44 with no luck while i was doing this swap. i had it up to 60 with no vibration with the funky offset housing.
