What to do 1st?

Just started tearing into my 79 j20, got 360 w/4 speed. Not sure exactly but low low gears, gotta push it to run 70. Im new to jeeps and amc engines. Where should i start? Just plan on doing a soa shackle flip and some 35's. If i get it going good enough ill make it my dd.

I always start with wearable items. Tune up, brakes, etc. going through these are the first step towards getting it into DD duty.

Sounds like you most likely have the optional 4.10's. 3.73's were standard, which you may have as well.

With 3.73 and QT with O/D my J4000 needed a throttle push to hold 70 until I went 33" tires.

Nice rig!

Don't forget to pull all the wheel bearings (front and rear) to check for wear and to repack them with fresh grease.
