Electronic ignition questions

Post by sgtpoliteness »

So, I'm just going through my ignition system cleaning contacts and such because I've got a good miss under heavy load. My question is if I want to replace this HEI style cap what do I ask for?

Also, there are no markings on this coil, anyone recognize it? It gets a signal from the MSD 6 box.

That's not anHEI style cap, it's a TFI cap. Any late 80's ford V8 cap should work.

The coil is also a TFI coil. And again, late 80's ford.

I think most people get them for 460's.

Ok, yup. All that is on a '88 Ford Super Duty 460. Thanks!

Well, it would be an F250 or F350, Super Duties did not come out until '98 :)

On the coil, if you look down in the place where the wires plug into I think you will see the +/-

Yup, hook up the TFI coil with the same polarity as the original coil and you'll be good to go. A big advantage to the TFI coil is that you can run it at a full 12V, it's not limited to the 8V that the factory ignition box puts out.

So, looking over some tech stuff does the TFI coil need its case grounded? It pretty much just lays, loose, on the intake manifold.

I would not just let it lay somewhere in the bay. I would build a bracket for it or you could get a bracket from a ford vehicle and make little mods to mount it in your vehicle. I build one yesterday and it sits in the same spot as the stock unit.

Yeah, I assumed as much. A bracket is on the long list of piddly things to take care of. I was just wondering about the electrical importance of having it well grounded.

I've never grounded any of mine. I've also run all the TFI coils I've installed with full 12V.

So, can I, as a diagnosis process, eliminate the MSD box and run 12v to the TFI coil? A Jeep buddy of mine thinks my high rpm/high load miss could be the box.

Yes. You can hook up the TFI coil per the stock wiring, or you can connect it to a 12V source that is hot with the ignition switch in start and run. I wouldn't use the battery as that source, but a switched source off of the ignition switch.
