Durability of stock Spring Hangers with Lift Springs?

Post by Jerry Blair »

As I climb under, around and over my 81 Waggy during this build I notice that the stock spring hangers are riveted/poorly welded to the frame.

My question, given that my suspension is not inheretly flexy, is should I weld these mounts for durability? I'm running BJs 6 inch springs and Rancho 9000 l shocks. Planned usage is backcountry camping, long distance travel, washboard roads and the occasional difficult trail.

Do the stock mounts hold up under moderate wheeling or are they prone to failure? The mounts on my TJ and YJ were not particularly welded with precision, but there was a lot more weld area.

Are you talking about the rear mount on the front leaf springs?

I've heard of folks ripping them off.

I welded the backs of mine on my rigs and have not had any problems, even after some pretty extreme 'wheeling on tons and 42's.

Weld the back of them and forget about it.

Yes. The front shackle hangers, too.

Definitely good to know. Thanks.
