Front D44 axle issue(s). Advice please.

Post by UKJeeper »

Hoping someone can help. Friend of mine is running an ARB'ed D44 front axle (originally from an FSJ) under his modified TJ.

He is running into a couple of issues. The main, and most important one, is that the 6 (3/8's unc) hub bolts keep snapping/shearing under stress, leading to the entire hub, wheel coming off.

Fortunately not while on the street, but when wheeling.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why, and perhaps how to prevent it from happening? To beef up the hubs and stop them falling off.

Also, he's run into an issue with the RH side of the axle. When the ARB is engaged, and the wheel lifted (by jack, other wheel on the ground), the wheel will lock when turned forward, as you'd expect from a locker. But when the wheel in turned in reverse, a slight 'grab' is felt, but then the wheel turns.

A strange one, that.

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

I was gonna say it's a bent spindle, but a bent knuckle is also a possibility.

Hows the camber?
