Any SBC 350 in j 200 problems?

Post by Irishjeeper »

My 230 tornado is going to go. I want to update the engine to more modern parts if it breaks and to run unleaded gasoline. Heard parts for a Tornado are hard to come by. So....Thinking of a small block chevy 350 into a '64 J 200, or a Chevy inline 6. Going to bolt it to a TH350 auto tranny, so both of those should bolt right up with no problems.

My question is....If I go the V-8 route is it crammed in there and am I going to have problems with the steering? Right now there is the stock steering box mounted on the frame. Just trying to plan ahead and see what other expensive mods i have to come up with if i go the 350 route.

If I go the Inline 6 route, seems like there is ample room to do a saginaw box either on or inside the frame and not too much modification. What are your experiences, or thoughts.

Why not a Jeep 4.0L? Available in any XJ and '91 to '95 gives you an easy to swap EFI system too.

Physically its fits fine. Engine bay stayed mostly the same from 63-91. And V8's were available in the 60's. Although the 327 had the exhaust routed around the front. But not sure if that was for steering box clearance or just to share exhaust manifolds.

You will need new motor mounts, and a new core support with larger radiator.

A saginaw box upgrade can be done with a V8 or i6. But is a bit of work as I recall as the frame is a little different in that area.

A 258/4.0 wont bolt to a TH350. But a TF727 or TF999 would work well behind it (Jeep versions, not chrysler version).

No, but it will bolt to the AW4 from an XJ (with the flexplate and starter from the XJ), a TH400 from a Jeep (I even have a brand new flexplate for it), 727 from a Grand Wagoneer and a few others
