H1 Wheels on J-20

Post by suttonlive »

I had been considering putting H1 wheels on the J-20. I can across a smoking deal and jumped on it. From reading I know that most of the time the wheels have to be re-centered, but I wanted to bolt them up and see how close it is. Here is the front passenger side just bolted up. The tie rod does touch. Has anyone put these on a stock suspension j-20 and did the typical new back spacing work out ok?

It is so close to working now. I am worried the new 3.5 inch back spacing with the new center will almost be too wide. Might be just right. Just wanting to get some opinions. This is a 33-12.5-16.5 wheel. I ran out of daylight before I got anymore pictures.

I have someone that I trust to help me get this done, but experience and a different set of eyes always helps.

Thanks,

So I have learned a few things.

I currently do not have factory rims. My J-20 came with 16" rims but it sounds like 16.5" was stock.

Factory back spacing for a J20 is 4.25" (not confirmed but believe its true) but not sure of the entire rim width.

The H1 wheels are 9” wide and for 16.5” Tires. Bolt pattern is 8 x 6.5. In stock from these wheels have a 7” Back space. Meaning that the wheel mounting surface is 2” from the front of the wheel.

J20's came with 16.5's or 16's depending on year and trim.

Lots of people run them re-centered. Moving them to 4-4.25" BS is what you want. The rear is more of a clearance issue than the front, as there is not much room between the springs and the tires.

They are going to stick out more though.

Try it on the back...they will hit the springs. I tried it with stock H2 wheels, with less back spacing by almost 2" and the wheel and tire still hit the spring. It'll either need to be reentered, run a wheel spacer or inboard the springs out back and come up with a better steering solution with a set of angled in High steer arms.

What runflats are you using?
(I think all the 8 bolt rims came with the magnesium versions)
I personally like the 12 bolt versions the best, thicker face plate and easier to cut the centers out of.
The 24 bolt versions are beef also but that's a lot of bolts to torque.

Image

That is re-centered to 3.5", thats the best you can get on the 12/24 bolt versions (not sure about the 8 bolt, I cant cut those on the waterjet due to the rim construction).
I went with the pressed centers over flat for strength, 1/4" thick center makes these boys pretty heavy.

Image

I actually did that all by eye with just 3 c-clamps, a straight edge and a ruler.
It balanced out with about 7oz of weight.
Feel free to browse the pic's I took: http://s149.photobucket.com/user/tadsal ... /HummerRim

I still have not finished this project but if I do I will use the PVC inserts, cutting the runflats down is a royal PITA.

I wanted to run them on my waggy with a full width swap eventually. I thought it would be cool to try to make it work without recentering or spacers. There are angled high steer arms made for that, move the springs in for the back. The only problem I see, the hubs will stick out.

Well here is what they ended up looking like. It ended up requiring 2" spacers on front and rear to keep the original wheel backspacing. I considered recentering but think I made the best decision for what I wanted them for. These are the 33x12.5x16.5R tires. I must warn anyone considering doing this and needing a 33" tire that I have found a VERY limited amount of manufactures of these tires. Only one in an A/T style. If you want 36-37" tires they are readily available. At least one tire has a problem so I am looking for a pair now.

I was worried about the ride, balance, and gearing but these tires ended up riding better than the tires that came on it.

I think they actually look better on the truck than these pictures show.

Are you running the factory axles? Think these will work on full-width axles without spacers?

Factory axles. You have to do something to change the back spacing. I chose to use the spacers on this truck. Have another rig that is getting new centers installed,

I think it looks pretty sweet :-bd

As you all ready stated and i agree completely, the spacers were the best choice based upon your needs.
